Christian Children's Fund to Change Name

By Aaron J. Leichman|Christian Post Reporter

June will be the last month that the Christian Children’s Fund will be calling itself by its present name.

Starting July 1, the children development organization will continue as ChildFund International following approval of the new name last month by its Board of Directors.

“We will begin our next 70 years with a new name – one that unifies us with others who are working for similar outcomes for children – broadening our reach and strengthening our impact to improve conditions for the world’s children,” said CCF President and CEO Anne Lynam Goddard months after the organization marked its 70th anniversary.

Though it helps more than 15.2 million children and family members worldwide, CCF has for years been criticized for the use of the word “Christian” in its name and its aggressive marketing to Christians despite admittedly being “non-sectarian.”

“While CCF was founded by a minister in 1938 and continues to do good work on the behalf of impoverished children, they are not an organization that attempts to bring the Gospel message along with the relief they offer to needy children,” MinistryWatch reported back in May 2004 amid concerns that the organization was misleading many Christians.

“Alternative Christian child sponsorship groups like Compassion International are available to Christian donors that desire to bring both spiritual and physical assistance to children around the world in dire need of both,” the watchdog group added.

Despite criticisms over its misleading name, CCF has earned 4 stars from Charity Navigator and touts itself as one of the world’s oldest and largest child development organizations as well as one of the first to offer "sponsorships" of individual children.

The organization has also provided nearly $3 billion in assistance to children and family members, with most funding coming from monthly child sponsorships.

“Our tradition of serving children around the world continues,” Goddard said. “We are proud of what we have been able to do over the past 70 years and we are excited and optimistic about what we will be able to do in the next 70 years.”

Today, CCF works in 31 countries and is affiliated with a network of 11 other international child development organizations that assist children living in poverty.

It was originally founded as China’s Children Fund but switched to the Christian Children’s Fund after its work expanded outside of China.

I sponsor 3 children through CCF (now ChildFund). I believe that my money makes a difference in their lives. I have sponsored 1 of the children for 10 years...he is 13 now. As long as they continue to make a difference in the children's lives, giving them hope to overcome the poverty of their situation, what does it matter what they are called? My children are from Brazil, this a primarily Catholic culture. I believe that even though the name does not include 'Christian' the care these children receive is definitely that. Regardless of the name above the door, it is the one on one interaction that leads a person to Christ or turns them away. Think about this...how many churches (with the name of Christ speckled throughout and the cross behind the pulpit) truly help people know who Christ is? It is the love that the sinner feels from the people within the doors that keeps the sinner there long enough to become a saint...not the name of the church.

I'll try one more time. My whole comment was in the message box (below) but, didn't show up, once it was submitted.

In response to Stevenweir. You didn't need to wait for the CCF to drop "Christian" from their name, you could have given to the Child Fund or many other non-religious,
    childrens charities

I have complained to the CCF. The following is my most recent reply to their response.

I think many of you have misjudged the name change as you have misjudged us atheists. I have always thought that I would give to this charity if they removed Christian from the title. Now I will. So ask which you prefer. A name which embraces all beliefs or only that of intolerant Christians. Since the beginning of the rise of Islam, you have started to see backlash against religion, because an Islamic nation, in fact, is holier than the United States. I say kudos to the United States and kudos to Christian Children's Fund for getting up to speed. Atheism or non-belief is growing faster than all religions, this charity is just going with the demographics.

I am glad they have come clean that they are not Christian and do nothing to help these children accept the invitation that Jesus gave, 'Let the little children come unto me and forbid them not...for of such is the Kingdom of God."

Give our money to Compassion International. If it is a group founded by almost any other faith on earth they would be honored to hold that name up as the source of the giving. I believe this group will change it again in seventy years or let's pray another minister will begin a Christian Children's Fund

What nonsense! Some board of directors who bows to such political pressure.
