Southern Baptist Head: We Have a Vision Problem

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

Southern Baptist president Johnny Hunt delivered an impassioned and fiery message to fellow Baptist leaders on Tuesday, imploring them to get out of the lukewarm state found in many of America's pulpits.

Referring to the recent national spelling bee word that had puzzled many, Hunt said, "America has not heard of the word 'laodicean' but I'm afraid that the Church has not perceived it."

His address during the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., was a challenge to a denomination that has begun to see decline in membership.

"How do you feel you're doing?" Hunt posed. "How do you feel the Southern Baptist Convention is doing?"

According to statistics recently released by LifeWay Research – the research arm of the SBC – Southern Baptist membership will fall nearly 50 percent to around 8.7 million by the year 2050 if the current trend continues.

Membership dipped by 0.2 percent in 2008. While losses only began in 2007 after years of growth, Ed Stetzer, director of LifeWay, said the rate of increase had been declining by 0.06 percent every year.

Titling his message "The State of the Southern Baptist Convention from Where I Sit," Hunt cited a passage from Revelation and indicated that many have become apathetic, indifferent and have lost enthusiasm.

"You can walk to the pulpit, you can lead the music, you can teach a Sunday School class and the attitude is 'I've been there and I've done that.' There's no tear in your eye, there's no fire in your soul, and there's no anticipation after delivery," he said.

"You can get to the point [where] you're so strong you can get up, read through your devotion, have this brief prayer and go. We become professionals. We know how to do it," Hunt added, lamenting how many have lost their dependence on the grace and Holy Spirit of God.

One of the greatest needs of the pulpits of America, he pointed out, is "more emulation of the truth of almighty God to match the exhortation of the proclamation of almighty God's word."

Southern Baptists this week will consider adopting the Great Commission Resurgence declaration, which reaffirms core Christian doctrines and aims to renew a passion for evangelism and church planting in America.

But Hunt is not concerned with simply adopting a document. After all, talk is cheap, he said.

What he's concerned with is seeing true commitment among Southern Baptists to the Great Commission Resurgence.

"I really do believe we need revival in the Southern Baptist Convention," said Hunt.

Revival, he indicated, must first happen in the more than 43,000 Southern Baptist pulpits in America.

"If God were to break the hearts of us, the pastors, and we would ... realize out there in those pews there's gold in them there pews! It's amazing how God's people will rise up and take a challenge," he highlighted. "They're not looking for a program to follow. They're looking for a vision to embrace."

He stressed that they don't have a money problem, for God has been good to them. "We have a vision problem," he said.

"God help us to get a vision of the lostness of the world," said Hunt, who is still convinced that the Gospel will be "taken and penetrate the lostness and the darkness of all nations" in his lifetime.

Hunt was re-elected for a second, one-year term as president of the SBC – the largest Protestant denomination in the country.

Before a person can have the authority to preach or relay the Gospel of the Kingdom through Christ to others, they have got to be an authentic disciple whether people see them or not. God sees the real us when no other human is monitoring. Question? Is Jesus Christ really the Lord over you when you are all alone in your home? There has got to be a Holy Spirit driven life in order to have a Holy life. God's Holy Spirit empowers me to be Holy and desire the things of God. The failure of the SBC has been that they have dismissed the everyday grace (help) of God from the Holy Spirit. They have also demonized the gifts of the Holy Spirit leaving a person who hears their teaching on the verge of apostasy. Salvation is a precious gift from the Holy Spirit too.

I remember one Southern Baptist student from Liberty University when I went there that was so indoctrinated against God's Holy Spirit that he blasphemed and defamed Him because his pastor was a disciple of hank Hanegraaff, but not of Christ. This college student did not want the One and only Holy God to be the Lord (owner) over his soul nor did he ultimately want God hold him accountable. As a result that student needed to be restrained because he had a demon and needed deliverance. "You cannot medicate a spiritual problem. Tranquilizing the physical body will never bring peace to the soul." - H. M. Harrell, Jr

It is IMPOSSIBLE to be a truly converted from the heart before God without the regenerating work of God's Holy Spirit. No one can have a relationship with God of his or her own terms. Regardless of how tight ones intellectual arguments are, they better have repented from a lifestyle of disobedience and have fixed their hearts on God with respect to His word and dependence on His Power if they ever expect to stay in fellowship with the Lord.

    1 Peter 3:12-15
"For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." 13 And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled." 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;"

Stay connected to THE VINE and be a true member of His body now unto eternity. (John 15:1-5)

"the control of the Holy Spirit, and God's plan and purposes for our lives and His Church and obedience to His inerrant, infallible, and holy Word!"

I have no problem with the Bible; I do have a problem with each person interpreting it to suit their own whims, which really stands out when two people post on the same Scripture and come out with opposite conclusions, both saying the Holy Spirit backs them. The Holy Spirit is logical not illogical, i.e., two posits with oppostie conclusions cannot be true at the same time. That's all folks! Sorta puts Sola Scriptura to bed, invented by a former Catholic priest.

dan, luck has nothing to do with it, it's all about surrender to the Lordship of Christ, the control of the Holy Spirit, and God's plan and purposes for our lives and His Church and obedience to His inerrant, infallible, and holy Word!

"Having attended this convention I am glad to be a part of the Southern Baptist Convention whose churches realize what the Great Commission is all about, we had the courage and passion several years ago to return to our biblical roots and now we are committed to moving forward in joining God and all other true believers in fulfilling His Great Commission."

    Good luck

ID is correct. The autonomy of the local church is important, as is adherence to the written Word of God. The Southern Baptists have those two things right.

I like that Southern Baptists do their best to stick to the Book. And I like that the local church is autonomous. Some have a point in that sometimes the Southern Baptists have tried to make this a better world to go to hell from. We should be making disciples of Christ.

    "He never talked about politics,"

But Christ did talk a lot about government, and that's the same thing.

"Those who supported women in ordination were castigated."

    Good!

Also, southern baptist need to set aside politics. Sometimes SBC seems to be so politically engaged that it looks almost like some branch of the Republican Party. Jesus said: My kingdom is not of this world (J 18:36). He never talked about politics, but solely about the Gospel. Try to be more like him. God bless you.

Until members of the Southern Baptists Convention come to true repentance, no longer blaspheme God's Holy Spirit by calling what he does demonic, respect and be baptized by the Holy Spirit, there is no ability to affect change in Jesus name. Too many people have resisted God's dealings to change them on the inside because they NEVER took themselves off the throne of their heart. When the days of trouble come they fall away because they were not rooted and grounded in Christ. Then leaders wonder why they make no difference on the outside. "Satan cannot caste out Satan." Only when a person has humbled himself or herself, exposed and emptied all their secret sin before God and repent of it will God give them His help. God has protocol in His Kingdom.

It is time to get back to preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom and King Jesus be set apart as Lord (Owner) within us.

When man-made philosophies such as hyper Calvinism and rationalism replaces an active faith toward God they have already abandoned the faith and they are left to their own devises.

_-But Hunt is not concerned with simply adopting a document. After all, talk is cheap, he said.-

In reality, the talk in the SBC has been costly over the years. People who did not side with Criswell, Paige and Presler, were put down as liberals. Those who supported women in ordination were castigated. As I told a Baptist relative, I would never dare attend a Southern Baptist Church. I have seen how they treat one another.
