Southern Baptists Celebrate Obama Election; Decry His Policies

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

Southern Baptists passed a resolution Wednesday, celebrating the election of Barack Obama as the first African-American president while at the same time denouncing some of the president's recent actions on such issues as homosexuality and abortion.

"Messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention ... share our nation's pride in our continuing progress toward racial reconciliation signaled by the election of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th President," the resolution states.

It passed with a near unanimous vote during SBC's annual meeting in Louisville, Ky.

Although most Southern Baptists did not vote for Obama, Daniel Akin, president of the Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., said it would have been "irresponsible" for the largest Protestant denomination not to speak of Obama's historic win.

The resolution on Obama was submitted by African-American pastor Dwight McKissic from Arlington, Texas. McKissic said it has nothing to do with politics and it simply recognizes the election of America's first African-American president as "a tremendous moment in our nation's history," as reported by the Associated Baptist Press.

In adopting the resolution, Southern Baptists not only praise the election but also commend Obama for "his evident love for his family" and "for his decisions to retain many foreign policies that continue to keep our nation safe from further terrorist attacks."

On the critical portion of the resolution, they express strong disagreement with the president on some of his policies, including his decisions to expand federal funding for destructive human embryo research, increase funding for pro-abortion groups, and reduce funding for abstinence education.

Southern Baptists also express "strong opposition" to the president declaring June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Month and to his determination to "strip pro-life healthcare professionals of their conscience protections."

The evangelical denomination urges prayers for Obama that he will promote liberty and justice for all people, including the unborn. Moreover, the Baptist leaders say in their resolution that they will "join hands with President Obama and his administration to advance causes of justice insofar as those efforts are consistent with biblical principles."

Akin believes the resolution reflects "a really good balance between our prayers and affirmation of much that our president represents" and "our strong concerns about certain policies that he advocates that we as Southern Baptists disagree with."

Other resolutions passed during the annual meeting include one on adoption and orphan care and another on biblical sexuality and public policy.

The latter expresses opposition to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which could threaten Christian organizations from hiring in accordance with their religious beliefs; the pending hate crimes bill, which would provide greater protections for crimes committed against homosexuals and potentially criminalize religious speech about homosexuality and "other unbiblical lifestyles"; and overturning the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

This year's SBC annual meeting drew more than 8,600 messengers, or delegates, which was an encouraging attendance number for Southern Baptist leaders. The meeting concluded Wednesday.

Flagged as inappropriate. show Homosexuality: A Heretical Issue When asked about calling those who support homosexuality and profess to be Christian "heretical," Packer very carefully and insightfully explained what he meant. He began by saying that as Christians we are tempted to sin in many ways, including homosexuality. However, because God has saved us through Jesus and empowered us with the Holy Spirit, we are to practice ongoing repentance of sin and rejection of sinful desires. He explained in great detail that he perceives the approval of homosexuality to be "heretical" because it denies a fundamental aspect of the gospel - namely repentance. Packer explained how for six years he called his Anglican Diocese to repent of their sinful support of unrepentant homosexual activity, to no avail. Eventually, his own archbishop sought to pull his license (essentially his ordination or credentials) as a punitive measure. In the end, Packer, along with roughly thirty Anglican churches, came out from under their "heretical" leadership to form a new Anglican alliance. Returning to the issue of denying a fundamental aspect of the gospel (repentance), he explained that 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 says, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." Packer was clear that those who do not call Christians to repent of homosexual activity are, as Scripture says, "deceived." He told me that the first of Martin Luther's 95 Theses was that the whole of a Christian's life is to be one of repentance of sin. Any Christian who does not practice and promote repentance is denying an aspect of the gospel of Jesus Christ. When I asked how the denial of repentance merited the label of "heretical," Packer said, " 'Heresy' ought to be used when an aspect of the gospel is being denied." He further explained that because God through Paul warns the Corinthians that those who practice homosexuality unrepentantly will be damned to hell, "Souls are put at risk every time homosexuality is tolerated." http://theresurgence.com/node/1080 hide

You got that right! Mike, what kind of teacher doesn't tell their student when they are going to fail? What kind of friend of that student doesn't tell them to shape up or they're going to fail?

Jhn 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

In another thread I posted exactly what Jesus said:

Mar 10:6-9 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
    For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

This was what Jesus said in response to a question of divorce (the ending of a marriage). Please note HE says male and female, man shall cleave to wife and the two (male and female) become one flesh).

There is a concept in current legal practice that if it isn't stated then we can find a way around it. For example, coffee cups now say "caution: contents may be hot" and I saw a peanut butter jar that said "may contain peanuts. Now, in the case of mankind, God is the judge and He wrote the book. A person would have to be a fool to play legal games with God.

Jesus opens the discussion of divorce of marriage with stating "from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female". The then states because of this "a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife".

This is called Jesus explaining to people who don't get it by simple observation. He spells it out. God from the beginning made them male and female. Because He made them male and female the man leaves his mother and cleaves to his wife (which is where the marriage part comes in as the foundational understanding for why divorce is not the plan). Then comes "therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder".

No where in the Bible does Jesus explain it any differently. He stated the cause of marriage (being required if there is a question of divorce) being because God made them male and female.

Whose judging your faith? We're telling you the Bible says your homosexual BEHAVIOR is sin. Also, Paul doesn't say not to judge the behavior. In fact:

1Cr 5:1-3 ¶ It is reported commonly [that there is] fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, [concerning] him that hath so done this deed,

Please note that Paul addressed the sin and JUDGED! I, for one, mourn for your soul. The church at Corinth said "live and let live. Don't judge...just accept." Paul hammered them for it.

"As far as being disputable...we're having a dispute here...whereas murder is pretty set in stone"

Actually, murder isn't set in stone. Is killing someone in during a car wreck murder? Is killing someone in self-defense murder? Is killing an enemy during war murder? Is a policeman shooting an armed man murder? The difference is how one views the law.

A "dispute" over anything can be had without a standard to judge by.

"disputable matters" is actually the New International Version. The NASB uses the term 'opinion'. Now, in the greek it's the word "dialogismos" (note it's where we get the word dialog from) which means:

    1) the thinking of a man deliberating with himself
    a) a thought, inward reasoning
    b) purpose, design
    2) a deliberating, questioning about what is true
    a) hesitation, doubting
    b) disputing, arguing

The KJV reads: Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, [but] not to doubtful disputations. So, what does the greek transiterate? The Young's Literal Translation reads as follows:

    Rom 14:1 And him who is weak in the faith receive ye -- not to determinations of reasonings;

Please note the word is about opinions and not actions. I have no problem discussing the Bible with you. This verse says to receive a weaker believer but not what they believe! After all, how are the weaker going to learn if not through conversation about the truth.

Still, your homosexuality is about your actions and not your opinions. That is what I have consistantly addressed as being sin. This is why I focus on the physical relationship within homosexuality when discussing it as did Paul in Romans 1.

As for what version I prefer... I tend to use "The Interlinear Bible" compiled by Jay P. Green. This has the Greek and Hebrew in it. I use my New American Standard for small group as I don't want to scare anyone with a 9" x 12" x 2" hard cover with the Greek and Hebrew in it! Most of the people in our church are the "weaker brethren".

Just FYI, the fact that I'm discussing homosexuality with you is indication that I haven't written you off.

But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?

You in the gay community do well to believe. The demons als believe, and shudder.

The word for "works" is which means:

    1) business, employment, that which any one is occupied
    a) that which one undertakes to do, enterprise, undertaking

Because your faith is without the works of sexual purity and is openly offended by Biblical purity...your faith is dead. That's the same with those who live together in any form. Why do you think Paul was so tough on the Church at Corinth?

"Accept him whose faith is weak without passing judgment on disputable matters."

The problem comes in that homosexuality isn't disputable. If it is then murder, adultry, fornication and the rest are "disputable" which would call into question all passages that speak of accountability of the brethern.

Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed [it] unto them."

The paragraph isn't specifically about idolatry but rather "all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men". Although idolatry is discussed..."all ungodliiness and unrighteousness of men" is the subject of the paragraph.

As a teacher, who had to do plenty of papers in college I'm sure, you know that a paragraph is to open with what you are going to discuss in the paragraph and then it is substanciated with the rest of the paragraph. You will find this consistant with all of Paul's writings.

So all those are okay, if they are not involved in idolatry? It's only when those things are done for idolatrous reason that they are condemned.

But this who Paul was talking about...verse 18 "The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness"

So this chapter is talking about people who suppress the truth by their wickedness....such as suppressing the truth about the sinfulness of homosexuality by their wickedness.

It is also interesting that Paul says: Accept him whose faith is weak without passing judgment on disputable matters. One man's faith allows him to eat everything, while another man's, whose faith is weak, allows him to eat only vegetables. The man who eats everything must not look down on the man who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the one who does, for God has accepted him. You can very clearly see that Paul is talking about a group of people worshipping idols, so God gives them over to their idolatry. When put into a historical context, it makes even more sense because it says men were having sex with temple priests during their pagan ritualistic orgies. These verses paint a different picture than a committed gay couple in love with each other (note that the verse says "they burned with lust for one another." Lust and love are very different feelings.

Rachel, the idea that homosexuality is a sin comes from people misinterpreting Paul's writings! You directly contradict the theory you're trying to spring on me! My name has been slandered many times over, such as saying I wouldn't have a problem with someone eating their own poop just because I am gay. Sickening, huh?

    Prophet:
Romans 1:21-27: For although they knew God, they neither glorified him or gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like men, birds, animals, and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them over to their sinful hearts and desires for sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the creator, who is praised forever, amen.
Because of this, God gave them over to their shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural lusts for unnatural. In the same way men also abandoned natural relations with women and and were inflamed with lust for one another.

Rachel, so long as people continue to defame the gay community on completely false charges, I will continue fighting it. Many on here claim to be fighting Christ's fight, yet their minds are filled with lies and hatred, oftentimes aimed at the gay community. Thinking differently than me is one thing...trying to slander my name without even knowing me is entirely different. Would you agree?

It was a balmy California evening. I had gone for a jog before I was to speak at a leadership conference. I still can't recall how I got there, but I found myself sitting on a curb
