Hundreds Flock to Boston to Celebrate 500th Calvin Anniversary

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

Hundreds of Christians have gathered in Boston this week for a four-day event commemorating the influence of the Reformation on Western Civilization over the last half a millennium.

    In this June 10, 2009 photo, a worker passes by the Reformation Wall with statues of William Farel, John Calvin, and John Knox, from left to right, in the grounds of the university in the center of Geneva, Switzerland. Preparations started to commemorate the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth on July 10, 1509. Calvin was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism.

Hosted by Vision Forum Ministries, “Reformation 500 Celebration” will highlight the influence of Reformers on the Church, the family, the state, and the founding of the United States.

“Reformers like [John] Knox, [Martin] Luther, and [John] Calvin championed the doctrine of Sola Scriptura, opening the door for broad-sweeping cultural reform,” noted event organizers, listing three of the most influential theologians of the 16th century.

Calvin, especially, will be a key focus in this week’s festivities as this year marks the 500th anniversary of his birth.

“Calvin’s biblical worldview in particular took strong root in the New World - one reason why scholars describe him as the true ‘founder of America,’” noted organizers.

Born on July 10, 1509, John Calvin is credited for his profound influence over major religious figures and entire religious movements. His ideas have also been cited as contributing to the rise of capitalism, individualism, and representative democracy in the West.

"The children of Calvin and the Reformers gave us the rise of nation states that embraced republican representative government,” pointed out Doug Philips, president of Vision Forum Ministries.

"Calvin's legacy included respect for life, a defense of the biblical family, and the rule of law under God.”

That legacy, according to Philips, contrasts starkly with that of 19th century naturalist Charles Darwin, whose birth 200 years ago will also be marked and celebrated this year.

Though he acknowledges that no two men of the millennium have done more to shape the thoughts of mankind or to affect the political and social destiny of nations than Calvin and Darwin, Philips listed Marxism, totalitarianism and eugenics as among the results of Darwin’s legacy.

"The reforms of Calvin resulted in the blossoming of Christendom. Darwin foreshadowed the darkness of modernity," he stated.

To highlight Calvin and Darwin’s diametrically-opposing worldviews, Vision Forum Ministries will host a “boxing match” Friday between two re-enactors representing the two figures.

The head-to-head debate is among the events of this week’s Reformation 500 Celebration and will be held just two days before Darwin apologists gather in Cambridge, England, to celebrate the legacy of Evolutionism as part of the 2009 Darwin Festival.

"This debate will feature an intense crossfire of ideas as the contrasting worldviews of Calvin and Darwin collide in a great conflict,” Philips reported.

In addition to the debate, Reformation 500 Celebration will feature more than forty sessions presented by over a dozen historians and speakers and spanning the Reformation period to the present.

On Saturday, America’s Independence Day, the “mega-conference event” will climax with the world-renowned music and fireworks celebration on the Esplanade by the Charles River with the Boston Pops Orchestra.

According to organizers, a Fourth of July celebration is a fitting way to conclude Reformation 500 Celebration as it acknowledges the providence of God in America’s founding and the birthplace of her spiritual heritage.

Reformation 500 Celebration will be only one of countless events that will be held around the world to mark the 500th anniversary of Calvin’s birth, which is only nine days away. The quincentenary is being observed around the globe with the Geneva-based World Alliance of Reformed Churches acting as a central organizer of "Calvin 09."

    I've decided to come back, but I'm staying away from arguments with homosexuals as I think they may just be on here to get attention and to use this forum to promote their sin, so to the homosexuals don't bother trying to wind me up. I won't answer you, at least not on homosexual stuff.

    Rightly said OFH. No one neither Jew or gentile can boast because we all are made clean in the same blood. If we boast, we boast in the L-rd for He redeemed us and brought us together.

    I just wanted to add one more thing. Before Yeshua died and was resurrected. The jews were the people who G-d chose to be holy and a light unto the nations. They were disobedient and harden their hearts. So the L-rd made a new covenant. This new covenant brought in the gentiles who, through Yeshua, inherited the commandments and responsibilities given to the Israelites to be a light unto the world. A holy and peculiar people. Like Yeshua said, You are the salt of the Earth, but if salt loses it flavor, how shall it be salted. As well as Be holy for I am holy. The veil was torn thus granting us access to be in the presence of G-d. We must come by faith like those who have come before us. But faith without works, is dead.

    OFH. Thanks for calming me down. I just love everybody and I want everyone to be one in the L-rd. It breaks my heart to see denominations and so many beliefs and ideas. I have dedicated my life to Yeshua and will be going to California in order to attend school and prayerfully receive ordination. Believe it or not, G-d wants me to unite the churches in America. It may seem impossible but I know a G-d who specializes in impossibilities! The Holy spirit once told me this; you cannot save everybody, but you can save somebody!

    Idietolive,

    I understand your zeal for the Lord but we must always try to share his truth with grace. We all have succumbed to our emotions here; however, let's continue to pray as we share . . . even when we agree to disagree with one another.

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 3:26 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 0

    The first five commandments given on the stone tablets pertained to G-d. The last five commandments pertained to man. When Yeshua said "All of the law and the prophets hang upon these two commandments" He was explaining the purpose of the law. He was stating all of the law and prophets are based on these two commandments which summarizes the ten commandments. If you hung a jacket on a coat rack, the coat does not support the rack, but the rack supports the coat. The same goes for those two commandments. The support for all of the commandments is based on your love for G-d, and your love for man. G-d gave specific instructions on how you demonstrate that love.

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 3:20 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

    The two commandments Yeshua gave were a summary of all the laws. If I told someone who did not know Yeshua to love Him with all their heart, all their mind, and all their soul. They would simply say. How do I do that? G-d gave commandments so out of love for Him, we follow what He said to do. If your dad told you not to do drugs and have sex before marriage, would you not do those things because you loved Him? If you did not love your Dad, you would do the exact opposite causing Him heartache. He didn't give you those instructions to control you, he gave them to protect you because he loves you. It is in our obedience to our Heavenly Fathers instructions we express our love for Him. For thus it is written. If you love me, obey my commandments.

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 3:14 pm Agree: 0   Disagree: 1

    I'm sorry for getting so worked up but Hell is never full. I am consumed with the spirit of the L-rd. I have purposed in my heart to follow Him and to share the truth He has revealed to me in His word. I searched for the truth for over 10 years spreading over 3 continents. Do you know where I found the truth??? In the very same book I carried with me to those different places. It wasn't revealed to me until I went into my closet one day and cried out to G-d asking Him what I was missing. I always felt an emptiness inside and I could not figure out what it was. I read my bible and fasted. I tried so many things to get the peace Yeshua spoke of. It wasn't until I realized what He was talking about when He said to follow me. The law is peace. Do you remember when He confronted the pharisees and said if you believed moses, you would believe me, for He wrote about me. Moses wrote the law. Yeshua is THE LAW. He was the manifest Words of G-d in the flesh. I have found true peace since that day. I know longer serve the god of this world. I must spread the good news.

    idie: Yes, there are 613 commandments. But in the new covenant, Christ has charged us with thousands!

    But all the Law hangs on these: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.

    Chas: "The Apostles make the decisions for the Church as a whole, like admitting Gentiles into the Church. Again, Peter makes this decision."

    Peter decided to let Gentiles in the church?

    PETER?

    I would suggest you read the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 10, specifically vv 34-36 where Peter says
    "And Peter opening his mouth, said: In very deed I perceive, that God is not a respecter of persons.

    But in every nation, he that feareth him, and worketh justice, is acceptable to him.

    God sent the word to the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all.)

    And v 42 "And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is he who was appointed by God, to be judge of the living and of the dead.

    Quotations from the Douay-Rheims, so we have no dispute.

    GOD told Peter to bring in the Gentiles, and JESUS is the judge.

    Not Peter, the stumbling block.

    OFH. You just fell off the wagon. There are more than ten commandments. Is it not a commandment that a man is not to lay with another man??? Is it not a commandment not to have sexual relations with an animal???? Did Yeshua not command we are to wear fringes on our garments to remind us of His words! Stop the cut and paste theology and submit to the living G-d! He died and rose again so that you might live! Cease from your own understanding and follow His commandments! If you love me, obey my commandments. John 14:15 What commandments was He talking about? There were more than 10. G-ds commandments are not a buffet line. You do not choose the ones you like and the ones you do not like!

    I am neither catholic nor protestant! I am a Jew. I follow the faith of the apostles who followed after the faith of their fathers. We follow the Lamb and His words. From the first commandment in the garden to the last commandment in the great commission! You who are called followers of Yeshua should follow Yeshua. He is the way, the truth, and the life. G-d does not change nor does His word. If you add or take away anything from it, surely you will be found a liar. Remember. You were grafted into the tree of Israel. Your faith is not of your own. Romans 11:17-21

    Roman Catholicism, plain and simple. 1. They are Arminian. 2. They hold onto to many false doctrines. 3. They teach a different Jesus (Gal 3) Most of all,there doctrine of salvation is a road to Hell. Remember the Great Doctrine of Grace! Which the Roman Catholic Church cannot tolerate. And we cannot forget Justification either. Look at our Reformed Church fathers and see how the Catholic church despised them. One of the ways to understand Calvin is to see what others have said about him. His most ardent enemy was Pope Pius IV who said,

    "The strength of that heretic consisted in this, that money never had the slightest charm for him. If I had such servants, my kingdom would extend from sea to sea."

  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 1:16 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0

    (The only laws we must keep are written on our hearts which are the 10 commandments)

    A couple of points here; first, no one is capable of keeping the law; only through faith in Christ do we receive the Holy Spirit who continues to sanctify our hearts, molds us into the image of Christ, and compels us to obey in love. Second, you speak of 10 commandments and yet your faith neglects the Second Commandment which forbids the making of any graven image (Deuteronomy 4:15-17) and has replaced the Fourth Commandment with a day not supported by Scripture. Why? I guess we really should not be surprised; adding and taking away from God's Word is something that was foretold would happen . . .

    Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ (Colossians 2:8).

    Prophet,

    That verse describes two things. It isn't either or, but both and. Notice that Peter who is a jewish Christian ate regular food after that and Peter is accused of eating with Pagans.

    Don't forget there are early christian writings from the first century that described Gentile Christians as eating non-kosher food and some Jewish Christians as maintaining this custom but it soon falling away. It is both and, not either or.

    Jesus rebuffs the Pharisees, by saying that all food is clean and that it is what comes out of the mouth, not in the mouth that is unclean. Jesus settles it in the Gospel of Mark.

    We can eat regular food.

    "For Protestants who go by the Bible alone, I notice your services are anything but. It is more about a charismatic preacher and his ego, than God."

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I noticed that Catholic services are full of non-Scriptural practices. A watered down message that really does nothing for the growth of a Christian. As for the worship, we worship God in spirit and in truth. I see nowhere in the Scipture that dictates what kind of music is allowable. And even if it did, the Catholic church is as much a violator as Protestants. The catholic music is nothing like the first century church music. So, you would as amiss as we are.
    God said to worship Him in spirit and in truth. If that means we raise our hand and shout God's glory and power so be it. Or if you so choose to remain quiet about His wonderous love and sing dirges, then do so. As long as your heart is right before God.
    The Catholic church, just as the pharisees before them, are so worried about the outward appearance, that they sacrifice the inward experience. They are so worried that our outward expression of praise isn't like theirs, that they ignore their spirit. They are white-washed tombs filled with dead men's bones.
    Ok... This conversation has gone sideways real quick. I'm going to let chas and prophet have this debate. I do have to say one thing though.
    Hear, O' Israel, the L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is one! Catholicism spreads a pagan view of G-d. Splitting G-d into three DISTINCT persons.
    G-d is a SPIRIT! He is one. He has ministered to us from the beginning in three different ways as shown in the Hebrew. Corrects and loves as a Father, taught us when He dwelled in the flesh as the Son, and comforts us with His spirit. It has always been about Him. G-d is our saviour. He is Yeshua Ha mashiach!
    Chas,(Profession of Faith)
    Nice to see scriptural support for these beliefs . . . do you have any for the following?
    Celibacy, purgatory, indulgences, saint worship, and the kissing of statues (the kissing of Jupiter who they now call Peter), the immaculate conception.
  • Thu Jul 02, 2009 12:58 pm Agree: 1   Disagree: 0
    The didache is still debated as being another spurious writing (which saturated the first century church). But, if the Catholic church would embrace the false books of the apocrypha, it's clear that they would fall for other false writings as well.
    Msn & Chas,
    Wow, in a blink of an eye the apostles who were Jews in Jerusalem became Roman Catholic and began teaching extra-biblical dogmas, NOT, funny thing is; there is no mention of any of these things written in their epistles!
    As always, I see that your posts lack the scriptural support needed to persuade believers on this board. Chas, please try to spend some time researching before coming here and misinterpreting the scriptures. As Idietolive stated earlier, Acts 10 had nothing to do with food but with the Jews recognizing that the gospel was now going to the gentiles and that God is no respecter of persons; context, context, context!
    For Protestants who go by the Bible alone, I notice your services are anything but. It is more about a charismatic preacher and his ego, than God.
    Protestant worship on Sunday amounts to a bible study where there is about 10 minutes of scripture read, and 45 minutes of Sermon. Thank God you guys still have communion and baptism and haven't thrown those out too!
    You usually have some hip band playing music that is not usually worshipping God but rather FLUFF Christian Contemporary music and their music is not theologically accurate. This is not always, but many use this style.
    Protestants have lost the mystery of the Sacred in Church, because their churches look more like Theatres.
    Protestants have lost believing in the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist over the years. With time Protestant worship, morals and beliefs are decaying faster than Obama can tax us.
    The Catholic Church will remain forever steadfast, and we will not change our worship, our morals or our beliefs. We have the Promise directly from Christ that the Gates of Hell will never prevail against us and we will last forever. Your churches and sects do not have this promise and daily you experience division and watering down of beliefs.
    I pray for you to all come home to the fullness of Truth!
    Ever read the didache Prophet? Probably not. This is a book that was found in the last 100 years and the book dated to the 1st century around 80 ad.
    This book shows the exact form of worship that has been passed down for 2000 years.
    While the bible was not fully put together, the Apostles from TRADITION passed on this process. The letters they read from the Epistles were being written during the time of the apostles and these Epistles were read duriing the life of the Apostles. Also, before some of the letters were written they gave oral witness to these letters. Jewish oral tradition was just as good as reading it. They memorized everything of God.
    We Catholics and Orthodox worship God how His Apostles set the foundation to do so. Protestants like Lutherans, Methodists and Anglicans worship more authentically Christian than Baptist and non-denominational types. The latter groups do not have Apostolic Worship, but rather man made styles of worship that can't be found in the bible nor in history.
    It just sucks for you to love Jesus so much, and not worship Him how he instructed His apostles. It must be such a bummer to love a bible that was put together by us.
    All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (Matt 6:9-13)
    Priest: Deliver us, Lord, from every evil and grant us peace in our day. In your mercy keep us from sin and protect us from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ. (John 17:15)
    All: For the kingdom the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen
    Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles; I leave you peace, my peace I give to you. (John 14:27) Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom where you live forever and ever.
    Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always! (John 20:19)
    People: And also with you!
    [The priest then directs the people to exchange a sign, such as a handshake or a kiss, or a word of God's peace to one another.]
    Eucharistic prayer
    [There are four of these, based on ancient prayers of the Church. Eucharistic Prayer Two follows as an example:]
    Priest: Lord, you are holy indeed, the fountain of all holiness. (2 Macc. 14:36) Let your spirit come upon these gifts (water and wine) to make them holy, so that they may become the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Before he was given up to death, (Phil 2:8) a death he freely accepted, (John 10:17-18) he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take this all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you. When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said: Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this is memory of me. (Mark 14:22-25) Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.
    All: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life, Lord Jesus, come in glory. (Heb 2:14-15)
    Priest: In memory of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Father, this life-giving bread, this saving cup. (John 6:51) We thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. May all of us who share in the body and blood of Christ be brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor.10:17) Lord, remember your Church throughout the world; make us grow in love together with our Pope and our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest in the hope of rising again: bring them and all the departed into the light of your presence. (2 Macc 12:45-46) Have mercy on us all; make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary, the virgin Mother of God, with the apostles and with all the saints who have done your will throughout the ages. May we praise you in union with them, and give you glory though your Son, Jesus Christ. (2 Thes 1:4-5) Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.
    See, you know how I know that Mass wasn't instituted by the Apostles?
    Because it uses Scriptures that weren't put into the Bible until centuries after the Apostles. The Apostles didn't have the New Testament, so how could they use those Scriptures in Mass?
    They didn't. Because Mass wasn't ordained by the Apostles. They worshipped God in Spirit and in truth.
    The Mass continued:
    So we just read a passage from the Old Testament, sang a Psalm, read an epistle from the New Testament, read the Gospel reading for the day and had a Sermon.
    Profession of Faith
    All: We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, (Gen 14:19) of all that is seen and unseen. (Col 1:16) We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, (Luke 1:35) eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, begotten not made, one in being with the Father. (Heb 1:3) Through him all things were made. (John 1:2-3) For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: (John 3:13) by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, (Matt 1:18) and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, (John 19:16) he suffered, died and was buried. On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures. (1 Cor 15:3-4) He ascended into heaven (Luke 24:51) and is seated at the right hand of the Father. (Col 3:1) He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead (2 Tim 4:1) and his kingdom will have no end. (Luke 1:33) We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of Life, (Acts 2:17) who proceeds from the Father and the Son. (John 14:16) With the Father and Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. (1 Peter 1:10-11) We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. (Rom 12:5) We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. (Acts 2:38) We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. (Rom 6:5) Amen
    Chas,
    I could create some false doctrine, and use Scripture in it, and that would make it ok?
    "The Catholic Church is the original, and no matter how crazy you get describing it, it has stood the test of time and defined most all of Christian beliefs."
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    They say that Peter is the head, or founder, of the Catholic Church. Yet they can't even adhere to his teachings.
