Traditional Lutherans Mull Alternative Path

By Lillian Kwon|Christian Post Reporter

More than 1,200 Lutherans disaffected by the recent vote favoring openly gay clergy have assembled in Indianapolis on Friday to begin creating an alternative fellowship for conservative Lutherans.

"We intend to initiate a process that we hope will lead to a reconfiguration of North American Lutheranism," said Paull Spring, chair of Lutheran CORE and the retired bishop of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod. "The convocation is for all who care for the future shape of orthodox Lutheranism."

Lutheran CORE is leading the Sept. 25-26 convocation. While the group has served as a coalition for reform for conservative Lutherans within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, it is now shifting its focus from efforts to reform the ELCA to efforts to enable traditional Lutherans to work together both within and outside of the denomination.

The shift is in response to last month's vote by ELCA's chief legislative body to approve a resolution allowing gays and lesbians in "life-long, monogamous, same gender relationships" to be ordained.

Delegates also adopted a new social statement on human sexuality that acknowledges the lack of consensus on the issue of homosexuality and also recommends that the denomination commit itself to finding ways to recognize same-gender relationships.

Following the votes, the coalition reported that individuals and churches have been joining their renewal efforts "at a rate with which we can barely keep pace."

The Rev. Mark Chavez of Landisville, Pa., director of Lutheran CORE, pointed out that they are not leaving the ELCA. Rather, the ELCA has left them, he said.

"Lutheran CORE is continuing in the Christian faith as it has been passed down to us by generations of Christians," he stated. "The ELCA is the one that has departed from the teaching of the Bible as understood by Christians for 2,000 years."

Former presiding bishop the Rev. Herbert W. Chilstrom urged CORE members against taking hasty actions that would maim the mission of the ELCA.

While calling dissident members to slow down, Chilstrom asked "Why is human sexuality a more church-dividing issue for some than any of these other equally complex questions?" such as war and health care. He indicated that homosexuality was not a matter central to the proclamation of law and Gospel and called for a resolution that would allow Lutherans to "live with diversity."

But the disagreement is not about sexuality, Chavez of Lutheran CORE clarified. It is rather about the source of authority in the ELCA, he said. Conservative Lutherans believe the ELCA has abandoned scriptural authority.

This weekend, Lutherans attending the convocation will consider a proposed constitution that will change the name of the ministry from Lutheran Coalition for Reform to a coalition for Renewal and also establish the group as a "free-standing synod" that will carry out ministries apart from the ELCA.

Other proposals being considered include initiating conversations among like-minded Lutherans toward a possible "re-configuration of North American Lutheranism, whether through existing or newly created structures."

Participants do not expect to make any major decisions this year and want to take time to discuss future actions before making any.

Earlier this week, ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson urged the denomination to refrain from making decisions that may separate members from one another. He urged members to engage in continued conversation with honesty and respect.

What I would love to see is some group or person who has enough authority to say "sorry, if you now hold to those views, you can't call yourself Lutheran. This is clearly not a Lutheran belief."

And then, someone who has enough authority in the Evangelical world can say "sorry, you're not authorized to use the word evangelical in your name, because these new views do not represent the evangelical faith."

To my Lutheran and Evangelical brothers and sisters who fight the good fight against this theological nonsense, I join my prayers with yours to God on your behalf (Rom. 15:30), even though I am neither Lutheran nor Evangelical.

One interesting aspect about Chilstrom's statement is that it is tantimount to an admission that he is wrong about what the Bible says. Chilstrom does not point to evidence that his views about homosexuality is correct. Rather, he argues that it is unimportant and why get so uptight about it? We are fashioning a new god, he seems to be arguing, and our god is more trendy and up-to-date than your God.

    PhiloAl,
Thanks for the plug for the conservative synods in American Lutheranism. We have been called "strict" (horrors!) and "confessional" (gasp!), but chalk it up to being loyal to God and His Word over against the prevalent culture that chases secular moonbeams.
You make a good point. Mere separation into a confederation of traditional Lutheran congregations that may still have connections to the ELCA may not be enough. Severence and joining other synodical bodies, while difficult, would leave behind a meesage that the "leadership" can't compromise on Scriptural principles. The necessary colloquies and discussions leading to such transfers would be an opportunity to explore the doctrines that really matter.
    Highest regards.

There already are Christian Lutheran alternatives to ELCA. The bible believing groups Missouri Synod, Wisconsin Synod and the AFLC (American Lutheran church)still hold to the authority of scripture and the sovereignty of God. Certainly, it is no sin to abandon the ELCA (Existential Liberal Culture for the Amoral). Unfortunately we must release them to worship their mother god, the planet and all things deemed by them important other than the living God. Many of the faithful have spoken the truth in love and warned of the path which does not lead to heaven. God have kind mercy on the souls of those who have ears to hear and do not hear, for the Lord is unwilling that ANY should perish but that all should come to repentance. Oh save them from this sin Father and give them your vision of truth which leads unto salvation. Amen

I saw this coming nearly 20 years ago. It's hard to believe that it's been in the making for so long. But, the ELCA is a persistent lot, and has put in the time to wait for those in opposition to either leave or die and be replaced with those who are Biblically illiterate. They first had to question the inerrancy and infallibily issues, then the rest was attainable. I wonder what is next? Perhaps full communion with Islam?

Translation: Why are you Puritan rubes getting so uptight? Don't you know that the ELCA has fashioned a god in Our image, after Our likeness? Is this not a marvelous thing that We have done?

Is'nt it ironic that those who have ran from GOD'S truth are urging obedient christians not to seperate from their unrighteousness and sin!!!? We need to pray for our brothers and sisters who are trying to stay true to GOD'S word, give them wisdom LORD,and discernment, fill them with THE HOLY SPIRIT so that they may not be led astray by satan's lies, strengthen them LORD-make in them stronghold's of righteousness, and let them hold your truths in their hearts with thankfullness and humility, always seeking GOD'S way NOT man's, AMEN. PRAISE TO OUR LORD AND MASTER JESUS CHRIST

Do you really think that God would want people to stay a single day in a church that has taken a vote instigated by unrepentant homosexuals and voted to disobey God, claiming that parts of His book don't apply anymore?

Don't mull. Faithful Christians need to run for their lives. Literally.

The attendance at this event has topped out at 1400, just over 900 congregations represented. The assembly's purpose IS to establish the charter documents for a Lutheran Synod outside the ELCA. Over the next few months, you should anticipate many, rather most, of those assembled to lead their congregations out of the ELCA.
