Handwritten Bible from Road Trip Hits eBay

By Jennifer Riley|Christian Post Reporter

Publishing powerhouse Zondervan is selling a Bible that contains over 31,000 handwritten verses collected from its cross-country road trip earlier this year, the company announced Thursday.

The road trip, called Bible Across America, was in honor of the 30th anniversary of the New International Version – the most popular modern-English Bible translation. To celebrate the anniversary, the company sponsored a 22,579-mile journey where Americans in 90 cities and 40 states each wrote a verse in the Bible.

It took nine months to write the complete Bible that boasts 2,200 pages.

"Nothing like the Bible Across America tour had been done before, so we weren't entirely sure what to expect when we launched the campaign," said Zondervan CEO Moe Girkins. "It quickly became evident that people across America love the Bible, love the NIV and were eager to be part of this unique project. We are thrilled to be just weeks away from publishing Bible Across America and are launching this auction to help this unique piece of history find a home, and simultaneously support Biblica's life- changing global Bible translation and distribution efforts."

While one copy of the handwritten Scripture will be auctioned on eBay, the other one will be given to The Smithsonian Institution, according to The Grand Rapids Press.

Proceeds from the sale of the eBay copy will go to Biblica, formerly known as the International Bible Society, which translates and distributes Bibles.

Interested people can visit the Bible Across America store on eBay. As of Friday afternoon, there have been 51 bids with the current bid at $4,250. The auction ends Dec. 1, the day that the the published version of the Bible Across America is release for purchase .

This is nothing less than the merchandizing of Jesus Christ! What in the world is the point of another "version" of the Bible anyway. Even my six year old, with a little effort, can understand the King James or the Revised Standard, etc. The translating of the Bible again is all about making another market for making more money (and doing this is at the expense of the scripture). Why don't they just give it an honest name....instead of things like "today's english version" or "Bible for today" call it the "watered-down word" or the "easy to swallow bible".

Making an industry of publishing and selling Bibles is not what I have a problem with. It is the total and unchecked exploitation of everything about Jesus all in the name of MONEY! Just one example....well, look at Max Lucado - Just where does he find all that time to author all those books in addition to preaching and his other ministry duties???? The answer is that there is an entire team who writes the Bible and he sticks his name to it....Reason? MONEY! The love of it is the source of all evil.

Look at all that money. This definitely is what Jesus was talking about when he said to give away everything you own.
