Ann Romney Snubs Vogue Magazine Offer?

August 31, 2012|5:58 pm

Ann Romney has reportedly turned down an offer to appear in Vogue magazine following reports that Anna Wintour had proposed her with the idea.

Wintour, Vogue's Editor-in-chief, is said to have close ties to President Barack Obama and reportedly raised in excess of $500,000 for his re-election campaign. Some critics suspect that Wintour's democratic leaning may have influenced Romney's decision not to appear in the magazine.

"Above and beyond any politics, she wants Vogue to be wherever the action is," A former Vogue employee reportedly told The New Republic.

Romney, the 63-year-old wife of Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, has been reliant on broadcast media to communicate with voters and on Tuesday night the First Lady hopeful gave a televised speech at the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., which received widespread applause particularly among female conservatives.

"I love you women! And I hear your voices," Romney said in her prime-time speech . "We're too smart to know there aren't easy answers. But we're not dumb enough to accept that there aren't better answers."

Romney also reminisced about meeting Romney, whom she began dating in high school, and her words had immense emotional appeal.

"[Mitt] was tall, laughed a lot, was nervous … and he was nice to my parents, but he was really glad when my parents weren't around," she said before going on to explain that Romney is now a man who "has tried to live his life centered on values of family, faith and love of fellow man."

"I've seen him spend countless hours helping others. I've seen him drop everything to help a friend in trouble, and been there when late-night calls of panic came from a member of our church whose child had been taken to the hospital," she said.

The mother of five received favorable responses for her speech, with the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza writing that Romney was among the night's "winners" in his "Winners and Losers" blog.

"Ann Romney did exactly what her husband and his campaign needed her to: she told the story of a Mitt Romney that almost no one in the country knows," Cillizza wrote.
