Polaroid to Release a Mirrorless Android-Based Camera

Polaroid confirmed that it will be releasing a mirrorless Android-based camera sometime in the near future.

The company's CEO Scott Hardy recently spoke with Imaging Resource, where he clarified earlier rumors by outlining the Polaroid's plans.

"There will be an Android powered, interchangeable lens camera introduced by Polaroid at CES 2013," said Hardy.

This camera is rumored to feature an 18-megapixel sensor and a 3.5-inch LCD screen for photo viewing. It is also supposed to run Android 4.0 as its base operating system.

Rumors of this Polaroid point and shooter began surfacing on Tuesday.

The rumored name for the camera is the IM1836 and other features expected to be on it include panorama picture taking, pop-up flash, build-in Wi-Fi, headphone outputs, HDMI outputs, and HD video recording.

The earlier report also pointed out that this rumored Polaroid device bears a striking resemblance to the Nikon 1 J2 mirrorless camera with the exception of a lens release button.

The current Android-based cameras on the market include the Samsung made Galaxy Camera and the Nikon S 800c. Both of these devices have received mixed reviews.

The Galaxy Camera comes with a 4.8-inch HD Super Clear LCD Screen. It also boasts a 21x optical zoom lens and a super-bright 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor for shooting high-quality images close up and in low light conditions. It is powered by a quad-core 1GHz processor and runs Android 4.1, JellyBean software with 4G connectivity on Verizon.

The Galaxy Camera can also send still images taken to other Samsung and Android devices instantaneously, including the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note from 200 feet away with the Share Shot feature.

AT&T also began carrying the Galaxy Camera earlier this year.

"Wirelessly enabling Samsung's Galaxy Camera will create a significant shift in how consumers share and communicate with photos and videos," said Chris Penrose, senior vice president of AT&T Emerging Devices.

AT&T currently offers the Galaxy Camera for $499.99 with a new 2-year contract. However, its version does not run on the carrier's LTE network.
