The Washington Redskins will face the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football tonight as the Redskins look to keep their season alive with a win that would lift them level with the Philadelphia Eagles in second place in the NFC East. The game will start at 8.25 p.m. ET and can be watched online through free live stream (details below).
The Redskins are on the brink, and cannot afford too many more losses if they are to keep their postseason hopes alive. Their 3-5 record leaves them with some serious work to do to catch the top placed Dallas Cowboys who are 5-4 right now.
However, if things are tough for the Redskins, they are dire for the Minnesota Vikings, who are in the basement of the NFC North and are stranded with just one win this season. Their 1-7 record almost certainly already guarantees their playoff hopes are dead and buried, and it would take a record-breaking run to revive their postseason dreams.
The fall of the Vikings has been shocking; last season – led by Adrian Peterson – they were one of the most exciting teams in the NFL and were serious contenders. However, this season they have looked disjointed with an absent defense and an offense that has come up short too often.
In total yards gained per game, the Vikings are ranked a lowly 27th in the NFL, gaining just 316.8 yards per game. Even with Peterson in their side they are only ranking 16th in the league in rush offense, posting a relatively measly 111.5 yards per game.
Peterson has gone 711 yards on 153 carries for 7 touchdowns and an average gain of 4.6 yards.
Meanwhile, the Redskins will be hoping to build on their good win on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. A 30-24 win will have given them more confidence, and if they can follow that game up with a win tonight it will be the first time this season they have strung together back to back victories. That could spark a second half of the season revival, and get them back into contention for the NFC East title. The division has been extremely lackluster so far this season, and the title is up for grabs for anyone who can put things together in the coming two months.
Robert Griffin III has struggled at times this season, but has still led their offense to a number 5 ranking in the NFL. They are posting 407.6 yards per game, with 146.2 yards on rush – that ranks them 6th in the league for rush offense.
RGIII himself is 181 of 300 for 2,169 yards and 9 touchdowns. He will be hoping to unleash Alfred Morris on the Vikings – he has rushed for 686 yards on 133 carries and 5 touchdowns this season.
If the Redskins offense can fire well tonight they should be able to get their second straight win and start to apply pressure on the Cowboys in the coming weeks.
