China is banning Bibles from the Olympic Games next year allegedly for security reason, according to reports Tuesday.

Residents queue up to buy Olympic tickets at a branch of Bank of China in Fuyang, in China's central Anhui Province, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007. Ticket sales for the Beijing Olympics have been suspended after overwhelming demand crashed the computer ticketing system, the organizers of next summer's Games said Wednesday.

The Bible is on a list of items – which include video cameras and cups – prohibited at the 2008 Summer Olympics, according to Fox News. This means Christian athletes will not have access to Bibles in their Olympic village housing.

Moreover, the communist and officially atheist country is banning all religious symbols at Olympic facilities in Beijing and warning visitors to not bring more than one copy of the Bible with them to China.

“The banning of Bibles and religious symbols by athletes in the Olympic Village by the Chinese government is evidence that it has not progressed to the level of civility that is worthy of hosting the international Olympic games,” the Rev. Dr. Keith Roderick, Washington representative for Christian Solidarity International, told The Christian Post.

“The Olympics should be an occasion to promote the higher aspirations of humanity – respect for human rights, peace and unity,” he continued. “Yet, the Chinese government has opted to make a statement of intolerance and disregard for universally accepted human rights.”

The controversial move came merely a month after China’s top religious affairs official pledged to encourage religion during the Games.

Ye Xiaowen, director-general of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, had said Beijing will “make sure” the religious needs of athletes and tourists will be met.

“Here I can promise that religious services we offer will not be lower than the level of any previous Games,” Ye said, according to Reuters.

China also announced in September it would set up a temporary church in the Olympic Village during the 2008 Games for Catholic athletes, according to the China Daily.

Liu Bainian, vice-president of the state-run Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, said the Beijing diocese was training priest fluent in foreign languages to celebrate Mass during the Games.

“All will be arranged in accordance with the practices adopted by other Olympic host cities,” Bainian had promised.

Following the latest development, Open Doors’ media relations director Jerry Dykstra said it was “apparent” that what the Chinese government says and does concerning religion are “two different things.”

“It wants the world to believe there is growing religious freedom in China leading up to the Olympics,” Dykstra said. “But the banning of Bibles and religious symbols in the Olympic village represents its two-faced approach.

“How can Christians worship freely in the village without Bibles?”

He pointed out other religious freedom violations in China such as increase surveillance of house church meetings, Bible trainings, and baptisms as the Games nears.

Although it is banning Bibles at the Olympic village, Beijing has reportedly encouraged hotels to make Bibles available in rooms for foreign tourists.

'The Bible has to be in every hand before Jesus returns!'
That is not true... The word says when all have Heard the good news. Don't wait to recieve a Bible. A Bible cannot save you. Understanding surpasses all knowledge. The Bible is the knowledge of God. God said His people perish for a lack of understanding. Check Isaiah chapter 6.
Ephesians 3:17-19
That Christ may dwell in your hearts and through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

The requirement is found in Matthew 28:19: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

Providing bibles is the proverbial frosting on the cake. Books can be banned, the Word cannot.

"China announced today that this report is completely untrue. My guess would be that it was in fact true, but when they saw the backlash this created, they had a change of heart."

Yep, those lying Communophobes ... when will they learn that Communism has done so much for the betterment of mankind and the cultivation of individual human rights, hmm??

'The Bible has to be in every hand before Jesus returns!'

In that case, He may never return. In reality, Jesus will return when the Father says for Him to come back. That may be today, tomorrow, next week, next year or 500 years. We honestly have no clue when He will return.

Yes, things are bad, and they are getting worse. However, the corruption of our civilization here in America has no bearing on when Jesus will return.

Is the Christian Post's source for this story more authoritative than the US Olympic Committee? The International Herald Tribune is reporting (http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/11/08/sports/NA-SPT-OLY-Beijing-Bibles.php) this:

"'We have heard from the IOC and there will be no restriction on athletes bringing the Bible or any other religious book into the village for their personal use,' [USOC spokesman Darryl] Seibel said in a telephone interview from USOC offices in Colorado Springs."

"What do they have to fear, and why?"

Good question! Perhaps they just want everyone on a level playing field. After all, the whole world realizes that the Christian god regularly intervenes in sporting contests, recklessly suspending his holy laws of nature to allow impossible field goals, unhittable sliders, and other obvious miracles.

Why should the Chinese allow this unfair advantage, when they are in a position to at least mitigate some of the awesome effects? Do you think Curt Schilling, a mediocre pitcher at best, would have a shot at the Hall of Fame if he was denied the opportunity to pray for five minutes on the mound holding his cross before he starts to pitch? No way! I guess poor Kyle Farnsworth, who does the same thing, must not be praying to the right god.

I know that Christians like to tie civil rights abuses such as this to atheism, but that is not the case. The communist system espouses the same kind of dogma that Christianity does, merely with a different focus. The state is supreme rather then some imaginary deity. It is the supplanting of another, contrary dogma that they fear, as they have a population already conditioned to blindly obey. Such populations have always been the most fertile areas for religions of all types to grow and prosper, and Christianity has always enjoyed it's strongest success among the most exploited classes.

Two things come to mind as I read this article on banning the Bible from the Olympics next year. The first are the words of Jesus after his resurrection,"Peace be with you". Jesus is in control of this situation, as he always is. I believe we do not need to worry about the banning, it's not the first time nor will it be the last. The second thing that came to my mind is that no power on earth will stop the spread of the Gospel to China and to the ends of the earth. My younger sister, who is only in her twenties, left early this year to do missionary work in China in preparation for the Olympics next year. China and the devil may ban the Bible, throw believers in prison and do their worst, but they will not prevail! The Bible has to be in every hand before Jesus returns! Please pray for the believers and the missionaries in China.

What the Chinese government is doing should come as no surprise to anyone. All comunist governments,as well as most worldly governments are and have been enemys of God since the beginning of civilization. In spite of a flourishing underground church, and outside observation the Chinese have continues to commit as much persecution and human rights abuse as they can get away with and still be a major player in the world economy. We need to remember to continually pray for our brothers and sisters in China and all countries where the cost of picking up our own cross and following Jesus is so much more than it is here in America.
