Winning People to Christ Not the End Task, Says Ministry Leader

By Michelle A. Vu|Christian Post Reporter

PATTAYA, Thailand – The end task of evangelists and mission leaders is not just winning people to Christ, contends the co-founder of a ministry that trains church leaders.

Too often Christians think that evangelism is simply going into all the world and proclaiming the Gospel and then baptizing new believers, said Bob Moffitt, co-founder and chairman of Disciple Nations Alliance (DNA), at the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) General Assembly on Monday.

But true evangelism goes beyond just teaching Scripture knowledge but combines knowledge with obedience leading to transformed lives.

“I grew up in a church where people were incredibly Bible literate,” Moffitt shared, “but you know what? We didn’t see a lot of transformed lives.”

“And that is because we assumed that the ideas we found in the Scriptures if they would be taught they will have application in terms of changing people’s lives.”

Moffitt acknowledged that ideas do have consequences, but added that change only occurs if the ideas are applied.

Evangelical leaders, he said, have successfully proclaimed the Gospel, moved people into the local church and taught them the Bible, but have made the “great omission” of biblical discipleship.

“We have not taught them to do what Jesus has said,” Moffitt commented.

“As a consequence of this great omission, we have seen incredible numbers of conversions, many churches planted, but we have seen little transformation,” he said.

Moffitt suggests that the reason why there are evidently not enough transformed lives is because Christians have missed the target.

Instead of the correct Great Commission target of teaching people to obey, people focus on a target of proclaiming and bringing people into fellowship in the church.

“The end task of the Great Commission is not winning people to Christ,” Moffitt contends. “Be careful, winning people to Christ is essential. It is part of the process but it is not the end process. It is not hitting the target.”

Likewise, planting churches and teaching people what Jesus taught are not the end task, even though both are “absolutely necessary.”

“The end task is, I submit, [is] equipping God’s people to glorify Him,” Moffitt said. “Equipping God’s people to be God’s glory by teaching them to observe all the commandments that Christ has commanded.”

The ministry leader observed that churches that are transforming are ones that express God’s love and that “live out the Gospel” that“is not just a proclamation.”

”When God’s people sacrificially are prepared by their churches to express the love of God, transformation comes,” Moffitt said.

In a discussion session after Moffitt’s presentation, experts from around the world discussed their views on what was presented. The evangelical leaders during the “Living Room” session agreed that the “secret” to transforming lives is showing love for people.

Moffitt’s presentation was part of the World Evangelical Alliance General Assembly in Pattaya, Thailand, where more than 500 evangelical Christians from over 100 nations are meeting until Thursday.

This year’s general assembly – the first in seven years – boasts a diverse array of organizations and denominational church bodies that include representatives of Pentecostal World Fellowship, the Mennonite community, World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Charismatic stream, the China Christian Council, and historic mainline Churches.

Other organizations represented at the WEA General Assembly include Campus Crusade for Christ, Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization, and U.S. Center for World Mission, among many others.

The reason mankind finds it difficult to believe that we are saved by faith alone is that our pride wants to insist that our works must play a part in it. No, they don't. It's His work that saves.

We are saved by faith alone. Otherwise, the work of Christ would not be enough to save us. It is sufficient. However, if we are truly saved, works will follow as a result of the salavation, not a cause of it. Salvation first, by faith alone. Then works as an evidence that salvation did occur. Our rewards, not our salvation, are based on our works after salvation.

tallguy, here's what you posted, "There is no such thing as saved by faith alone! Yes, we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, but it's faith AND works." So where did I not understand you to say you believe in a works salvation, please note that I did not say a works ALONE salvation. I don't believe I twisted your words, but rather I totally understood your words which are the same words I heard while growing up in the catholic church.

believer, you'll need to reread my post. Nowhere did I say that we gain our salvation by works. Please don't twist my words.

And nowhere does the Catholic Church say that our salvation is by works. The Holy Catholic Church emphasises that we are Saved by Grace Through Faith in Jesus Christ. It is nothing we can earn, it is a free gift to us, and we cannot work our way into heaven!

Yet, did Jesus say to the rich young man...Simply believe unto me brother....

No, there is more to it then simply believing in Jesus...

I agree with the author of this article where He said,

"The end task is, I submit, [is] equipping God’s people to glorify Him," Moffitt said. "Equipping God's people to be God's glory by teaching them to observe all the commandments that Christ has commanded."

We must teach the word of God, share His love, encourage people to trust Him, and teach they must obey Him.

tallguy, please read Ephesians 2:8-10 and I emphasize verse 10 which says we are not saved by works but for works that God has planned for us to join Him in doing for all of eternity. James says that works are the affirmation of our faith and salvation, not that works save us, but I'm glad to see you honestly admit that the catholic church does hold to works salvation as some of us former catholics have contended all along and have been rebuked for by some catholic posters.

Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father who is in heaven. Matthew 7:21

Faith is more than just belief. Even demons believe in Christ and tremble.(James 2:19) Faith includes obedience to God's commands in His Word.

Sure wish that entries were shorter. When you write a book, people tend to skip reading it. Long entries might be better suited for a personal blog site.

we ARE saved by faith alone - not by deeds or by obedience. But unless someone dies immediately after coming to faith in Christ, its only a thought if there is no evidence. Without the evidence of trusting God, of loving God through deeds that exemplify the faith we claim to have, then we have not faith, just a thought.

There is no such thing as saved by faith alone! Yes, we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, but it's faith AND works. The works are NOT things like washing the windows at the church. That will NOT get you into heaven. The works are love, charity, and kindness towards others. The works are striving to change by the grace of God into the better people that He has destined us to become. All through scripture, it states faith and good work.

When the rich young man came up to Jesus and said good teacher, What Must I do to to inherit eternal life (Mt19:16), Jesus Did NOT say you just need to believe unto me brother. No! Rather Jesus told the young man to observe the commandments, and also to go sell what he has, give the money to the poor, and to follow Jesus.

If it were just by believing in Jesus we'd all be doomed. Even the demons believe in Jesus, and they shiver ands quake...

    Star,
So "works" don't save you, but your "obedience," does; and our obedience isn't works. And you get that from ONE verse in Scripture when the rest of Scripture testifies we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. OK.

I did not say that works saves you. You can never be good enough for God. You can't live righteously enough, you can't pray enough, fast enough, give enough tithes and offerings, help the poor enough, share the gospel with people enough, or any other thing to earn your salvation with God.

What I am saying is that when God deals with your heart about needing to repent from some active sin in your life whether it be a moral sin, needing to make Jesus Lord of your life, or forgiving someone who has wronged you that you need to obey God and give up your sin or forgive the one who has wronged you. If you don't, then God will continue to hold that sin against you until you do. If you die without doing what God revealed to you what He wanted you to do (ie, didn't obey God) then you will die in your sins and you will perish.

God wasn't kidding when He inspired the unknown writer of Hebrews to write "And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;" (Hebrews 5:9).

'I grew up in a church where people were incredibly Bible literate'

this means that christian / pastors are experts in the law. But they do not practice what they preach. they use guilt, shame blame, & fear quoting from the bible in the name of obedience. their teachings are vague & the verse they quote do not apply to the real world.
there are 3 kinds of people in the bible / chruch

pharisee - arrogant self righteous; they always point to sin. they look for something to 'accuse' you

experts in the law - self explanatory; quoting the verses in the bible

hypocrites - they do not practice what they preach. after christians accuse you of sin (judging), bec. they quoting this verse or that verse, they do not practice what they preach.
i.e. self is a sin! Deny yourself (as the bible says), but the same people who accuse you (judge you) of selfish & arrogance bec. they quote 'self denial' in the bible, they practice hypocrisy but not practicing what they preach. especially pastors televangelist, they have multi million dollar homes & luxury cars that they buy for themSELVE! then their tactic is they accuse you (judge you) but when you rebuke them of the same sin they accuse you of, they then quote the verse 'ye not judge' me bec. they are like the pharisees - so holy & self righteous. they think they are filled with the holy spirit & 'christ-like'
and finally, I do not see christians change. they are like the pharisees, blowing their big mouths to look good for jesus but again they do not practice what they blow their big mouths for.

    Star 2,
Thanks for the reply. So Paul was kidding when he said, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "By grace you have been saved, through faith, and it is the gift of God." Or, "by works of the law shall no man be justified."? Or, "God justifies the wicked."

    Part 1

The Word of God teaches that Jesus is the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9).

A lost person becomes born again of the Spirit of God when that person hears that he/she (hereafter refered to as he) is a sinner deserving of eternal damnation, that Jesus paid for his sins by dying on the cross for him, that God raised Jesus from the dead showing His power over death, accepts what Jesus did for him, turns to God in prayer confessing to God that he is a sinner, asking God to forgive him of his sins because of what Jesus did for him, asks Jesus to come live in his heart, and be the Lord (boss) of his life.

One of the evidences that a person has truly been born of the Spirit of God is that the believer has a changed life; he is no longer the same person (2 Cor 5:17).

God expects His children (born again believers) to walk in obedience to Him in order to obtain eternal life (Hebrews 5:9). As a believer lives for God, God reveals to him what He wants him to do in the kingdom of God (Ephesians 2:10). God also deals with the sin issues in a believer's life. As the believer lives for God, does those things that God wants him to do, allows God to remove sin out of his life, then the believer becomes more and more like Jesus.

The Word of God says that a believer can have confidence before God on judgment day if the believer has been perfected in God's love (1 John 4:17). If the believer does not have confidence but has fear then the believer has not been perfected in God's love (1 John 4:18). The Word of God also states that to be perfected in God's love the believer has to keep God's word (ie, commandments). (1 John 2:5).

Jesus said that one of the functions of the Spirit of Truth (the Holy Ghost) is to show you things to come (John 16:13). When a believer becomes born again the retention of his salvation is in the hands of God (John 17:11). If there is unforgiven sin(s) in a believer's life as he is on his death bed he will have fear (1 John 4:18). God will deal with that believer about that (those) sin(s) and give him the chance to be forgiven of that (those) sin(s) before he dies. If the believer cooperates with the Holy Ghost then the believer will be forgiven, he will have peace with God, and he will go to heaven when he dies. If the believer does not cooperate with the Holy Ghost, then he will continue to fear death because he has unforgiven sin in his life. The unforgiven believer will perish because there is no respector of persons with God (Romans 2:11). Anyone who dies in their sins will go to hell.

    Part 2

Let me share a personal testimony that will illustrate this point.

God gave me a ministry to the elderly in several different nursing homes. In one nursing home, there was a lady whose name was Gladys. She was difficult to deal with. She cursed and gave everybody a hard time. When Gladys was ugly and cursing I would tell her that she needed to get saved. She said that she was already saved. I told her that she needed to act like she was. Needless to say I was going nowhere with her.

One day God told me to fast and pray for her salvation. So I did. Afterwards, I was spending time with her one evening and God had me tell her that she needed to recommit her life to Jesus. That she heard. I preceeded to give her the gospel. The Holy Ghost was all over her convicting her of being a sinner and that Jesus died for her. She wanted to recommit her life to Jesus and she did. There was evidence of a change in her life. She stopped cursing, wasn't ugly to people anymore, she sang and prayed to God, and etc.

Some weeks laters I was visiting her again. When I went in her room she said that she was going to die and she was afraid. I told God that I didn't understand. I said, she just got saved not too long ago and she shouldn't be afraid to die. God told me to ask her about her past. So I did.

Gladys had a difficult past. She had been wounded real bad in life. As Gladys was telling me about it I told her that she needed to forgive or God would not forgive her (Matt 6:14-15). As she recounted the times she had been wounded I would ask he if she forgave the person. She would say "yes I forgive" or she would say "Lord, I forgive." After she recounted all the incidents where she needed to forgive she then said, "I have peace now and I am not afraid to die."

If a person, believer or otherwise, has fear on his death bed it is because he has unforgiven sin in his life. If a believer has no unforgiven sin in his life (all sins have been forgiven), then when he is on his death bed, he will have peace.

God knows what is a barrier between you and Him. Before you die He will convict you of your need to repent from what He is holding against you. It is responding to that conviction that brings forgiveness. If you rebel and don't respond to His urging to repent then that sin is held against you.

Jesus said that when you die it is either heaven or hell. When you die, if you have unforgiven sin in your life, you will perish but if all your sins have been forgiven by God through Jesus, you will go to heaven.

As to "once saved, always saved", you can say that one can loose one's salvation, or that once saved always saved. That is really an argument from a lack of knowledge of scripture.

Where you stand on this issue depends on your perspective. Are you looking at it from man's perspective or from God's perspective?

Salvation comes from God. There are those who want to say that people who walk away from God lose their salvation, while others want to say that those who walk away from God were never saved to begin with. *shrug* the result is the same. It seems to me that the difference is perspective - the former looks at things from man's perspective, while the latter looks at things from God's perspective. Some of us want to believe we had something to do with our salvation. But remember that God is the author of our faith and salvation (Hebrews 2:10; Hebrews 12:2).

Is God all powerful? Does God not say that His sheep hear His voice and He gives them eternal life and no one can be snatched out of His hand (John 10:27-29)? Does God not say that those He foreknew he justified and glorified?

    Romans 8:29-30
29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Does God not give us examples of different kinds of seed, where some will produce fruit and others will wither and die (Mt 4:1-20)? Does God not tell us we need belief in Christ for eternal life (John 3:16-18)? But then does God not say that if we have no deeds, our faith is dead and can not save us (James 2:14-26)? Does God not say that we must repent, turn to God, and have deeds that express that faith (Acts 26:20)?

We can not loose what we never truly had. But we can not be taken out of God's hand if we DO have it. If you do not repent, if you live a pattern of sin that you refuse to let go of, then you must question your salvation. However, if truly love God, trust in God and the saving work of Christ, then you will have a life where you are changed internally and this will express itself externally.

So can you loose your salvation? Not if you never had it to begin with. But can you loose it if you truly did have it to begin with? No.

"But true evangelism goes beyond just teaching Scripture knowledge but combines knowledge with obedience leading to transformed lives."

"yes, I understand that verse to refer to Christ. But how does OUR obedience save us? "

Faith without works is dead. We can have faith our car is going to get us from point A to point B. However...if it doesn't WORK that faith is in vain. Works is the outward life of inward salvation.
