Prayerful Americans Called to 'Adopt a Liberal'

By Lawrence D. Jones|Christian Post Reporter

A Christian legal group has introduced a new initiative to encourage prayerful Americans to “adopt” liberal leaders.

Fla.-based Liberty Counsel’s “Adopt a Liberal” program, inspired by the exhortation of the Apostle Paul, as recorded in 1 Timothy 2:1-3, invites prayerful conservatives to pick out a liberal or two who is in a position of authority to be the target of “regular, intense prayer in accord with St. Paul's admonition to his disciple, Timothy.”

“Prayer is powerful! It allows God to change the minds of those for whom we are praying. In fact, we fully expect that many of our adoptees will ‘graduate’ from this prayer program with vivid testimonies of God having changed their lives and worldviews,” Liberty Counsel stated.

While the legal group admitted that there is a certain amount of tongue-and-cheek humor associated with their new program, they said they do want it to conform with the biblical passage in Paul's letter and for it to move liberal leaders and cause them to be the kind of leaders who will encourage others to lead "a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence."

The Rev. Barry Lynn, the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State and one of the liberal leaders listed by Liberty Counsel, expressed Thursday that he’s thankful for the prayers being said on his behalf by supporters of the Religious Right group.

“This is quite an honor,” Lynn said. “I’m pleased that Liberty Counsel considers me such a threat that I rank alongside President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.”

But Lynn added that Liberty Counsel shouldn’t expect him to change his views and warned that any Liberty Counsel supporter who “adopts” him had better be prepared.

“I like to stay up late, and I’m not doing any chores around the house,” Lynn quipped.

Currently, Liberty Counsel’s list includes 11 individuals – Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Congressman Barney Frank, Director John Holdren, Barry Lynn, Secretary Janet Napolitano, President Barack Obama, Senator Harry Reid, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Senator Olympia Snowe.

Participants can also select “The Unknown Liberal,” a liberal not on the list who also “desperately need[s]” their prayers.

“Please pray daily for the liberal(s) of your choice, so each can become a good influence on our Nation's culture,” Liberty Counsel stated.

Flagged as inappropriate. show Just a few days ago, I was confronted by a group of people who claimed to be "Christians calling for prayer" for me; within a few minutes they were saying that because I do not agree with them on certain academic points of biology and linguistics, kidnapping and murdering me would be no cause for concern. Because I see things differently from them, they have made the decision that my life is not worth living, and I am already beneath the threshold of death. The next day, they sent Bible verses mixed up in a way that read as calling for me to commit suicide. hide

The most amusing thing about this article, is not the article, but
the reaction of those who, supposedly, don't believe in prayer, and
    those who supposedly do.

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests."
    Epesians 6:18

Flagged as inappropriate. show Proclamations like this are what makes Christians look like a bunch of silly superstitious buffoons. Calling on your personal Sky Ghost to change Barney Frank into a heterosexual and Pelosi into a rational human being ranks right up there with rain dances and a fear of stepping on sidewalk cracks because they'll break your mother's back. hide

Just as every Godly leader from King David through our Founding Fathers needed prayer, to the Current Vocal Anti-God leadership of today who are alsoin need of prayer.
If and or while we adopt a liberal we need not forget the support of prayers to those that at least are trying to follow Father God, Abba Yahweh.
just as God loves the Sinner (you and me) and hates the sin (of you and me) We All need to do the same.
Pray for and not at Our leaders just as we would for Everybody else.
Just as it says in Gods wonderful outline for prayer.
"forgive us our tresspasses JUST AS we forgive those that tresspass against us".
In other words God treat me just like I treat anybody and everybody else, If I've been unforgiving, Unloving, a stumbling block, a curse, Etc. to ANYBODY treat me in the same fashion.

    Graceman,
Thank you for your prayers, but I am in agreement with oldstudent on this issue. I acknowledge and agree heartily with your citation from James, prayer is important, but it must be directed at the whole leadership, which needs God's blessing and guidance. This article sounds more like praying a politican onto a political platform of your choice, and not necessarily seeing that God's will is done.
There is an element of politics that Christ would avoid. He wouldn't curry to Herod's whim to see Him dead (Luke 13: 31, 32), but granted that the political spectrum deserved its respect (Mt. 22: 21). The Church shouldn't involve itself in government, but the faithful should seek the peace of the city (Jer. 29: 7). Thus a Christian could well be a conservative seeking the integrity of God's Word, a liberal in the finest examples of generosity, a progressive in advancing the kingdom of God, and a libertarian in proclaiming the Gospel that delivers from sin, guilt, and shame.
I know that these positions have their own specific political spin. Pity.
    Warmest regards.

This is disgusting...liberals are no worse than the conservatives. This makes God a politician choosing sides not the Righteous One whom all are under and all fail to follow.

This is a violation of the 1st commandment, making politics a greater god than Yahweh and then trying to make Yahweh into the image of this other "god" created.

    Grace and Peace,
    Jim

Praying is easy. Adopt a needy child and provide a stable home. That is impressive and I know a great many who do so. Of course the famous movie stars make the press but I have had almost a dozen kids, many from abusive backgrounds, pass through my program because they were adopted by Christians who wanted to take on these wounded children. And if you are not at apoint where adoption is possible, volunteer with kids at school, in institutions and juvenile facilities, or help support the programs that are struggling because of the economy. It's easier to balance local budgets by removing funding for at risk kids because they don't have lobbyists, don't contribute to election campaigns etc. God's love in action rather than propaganda.

    Jesus Prays for His Disciples:

6"I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. 13"I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

    lpepperw,

I've served the Lord with joy and truth, for 30 years. What you see as my being bigoted, is a concern and yes disgust, that this legal group, the Liberty Counsel, could see anything whatsoever humorous about prayer.

Prayer is a sacred charge and privilege we as followers of Christ have been given. When we pray we are entering into the very throne-room of God.

To use it in this manner, politically in a 'somewhat' tongue in cheek manner, as was stated, is not real prayer. So yes, it is mockery.
