'Girl Meets World': Netflix Will Not Pick Up Fourth Season

Fan-favorite "Girl Meets World" had aired its last episode early this year, but a lot of the show's followers are still hoping and waiting for a new season of the halted Disney Channel series. What is the current situation with the rescue effort for the show?

Unfortunately for "Girl Meets World" fans, Netflix won't be picking up the canceled Disney Channel series, according to The Wrap's exclusive feature on the news. According to sources, the streaming service has more or less declined to carry the show's fourth season.

An informant familiar with the Disney Channel's arrangements with the production team of "Girl Meets World" informed The Wrap that the show only had an "option" for the fourth season. The sitcom was officially commissioned for three seasons by its current network, and may not have the guarantee to have a fourth season run.

Regardless, showrunner Michael Jacobs does not necessarily agree with the show's cancellation by Disney Channel. He states that the story of "Girl Meets World" still needs to continue for a little while.

"We are certainly having discussions, there are some interested platforms," Jacobs said. "I don't think 'Girl should have been canceled. We signed to do four seasons. I thought we would be able to tell stories through four seasons. That's the way we set it up. It was going to be a remarkable final year. But I understand, things end."

The show's cancellation was officially announced on Jan. 4 this year. The show's demise inspired an entire range of efforts to revive the show. A "Save Girl Meets World" site had sprung up with details on how to directly petition show carriers like Hulu, Amazon Studios and the Disney Channel. Ongoing twitter campaigns conducted under hashtags such as #GirlMeetsHulu or #SaveGMW are also being carried out.
