Eva Ekvall, Miss Venezuela 2000, who died this week aged just 28 after a two-year battle with breast cancer, confessed she would be a Buddhist if she were to choose a religion.

“I don’t have a definite religion, but if in the future I feel obligated to pray, I will do it as a Buddhist,” Ekvall said in one interview in 2010 with the Venezuelan journalist Alexis Correia, according to the publication El Nacional.

In the interview Ekvall thought that she had won her battle with cancer. She spoke about her book Fuera de Foco in which she intended to send a message to the population to prevent the illness.

Ekvall died on Saturday to the dismay of thousands of Venezuelans who watched her fight against cancer.

“I need to send the message of the need for cancer prevention,” Ekvall said in the interview, El Nacional reported.

“Ekvall has been healed completely,” said the journalist at the time. She testified in the book about the great support that she received from her husband, John Fabio Bermúdez.

In a recent interview with a Peruvian journalist, Jaime Bayly, Ekvall appeared very optimistic talking about her victory over cancer.

People have taken to Twitter and Facebook to mourn the Venezuelan beauty queen. Her husband, Bermúdez expressed: “Today we lost the bravest and most brilliant woman I’ve ever met. She fought until the last moment, but she couldn’t [overcome] physically. She leaves a legacy and a role model to follow.”

In a photo of him and Ekvall in a hospital bed that was posted on his Twitter account he said: “Always together… I love you wife.”
