1. Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is possibly the most popular statue of Jesus in the world. The sculpture is the fifth largest statue of Jesus globally, measuring 98 feet high with an additional 26 foot tall pedestal. The statue’s arms extend 92 feet wide.

Christ the Redeemer can be found on the peak of the 2,300 foot Corcovado mountain in Rio. Heitor da Silva Costa, a Brazilian engineer designed the statue as a symbol of peace, which was later created by French artist Paul Landowski. Construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1931.

This religious symbol has become an iconic symbol for the city of Rio de Janeiro and is reportedly the single most used image to depict the city. In 2015, two explorers, one Russian and the other Ukrainian, Vadim Makhorov and Vitaly Raskalov, climbed the statue and captured stunning video footage and photos of the religious symbol.
