In an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” last Wednesday, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., elaborated on what he characterized as the national security threat posed by TikTok. He maintained that the CCP uses “the app to track our whereabouts, they track our data, they track our keystrokes, they want all of that information from Americans.”

“This is about putting Americans back in charge,” he contended. “Get China off of our cell phones. Get China out of our media. Let’s give Americans control of their lives back.”

Hawley called for the establishment of “a firewall between TikTok and Beijing because the whole deal is all the information TikTok gets from Americans is available to the Chinese Communist Party.” He asserted, “that’s the problem, that’s why it’s a security threat.”

Hawley has emerged as one of the most outspoken supporters of banning TikTok as long as it maintains links with the CCP. In a post on X following the passage of the Protecting Americans From Foreign Advocacy Controlled Applications Act, Hawley proclaimed, “NOW is the time to act on TikTok and stop China spying” in addition to calling on the U.S. Senate to “take up this bill immediately.”
