Churches across the United States and abroad will celebrate Easter on Sunday, a holy day commemorating the resurrection of Jesus, as recorded in the New Testament.

Also known as Resurrection Sunday, the observance is among the holiest days of the Christian calendar and often sees some of the largest numbers for worship attendance in a given year.

The religious observance has a long history, going back to the earliest days of the faith, and has seen its share of debates over matters like when to celebrate it in a given year.
