5 new Texas laws set to take effect next month

4. Ban on student LGBT clubs
Public school districts are prohibited from establishing any diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices, policies or activities that “reference race, color, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation” under Senate Bill 12, which takes effect Sept. 1.
The bill also bans student clubs based on sexual orientation or gender identity, such as Gay-Straight Alliance, as well as any “instruction, guidance, activities, or programming regarding sexual orientation or gender identity” to students through 12th grade.
Recognizing parental rights to their child’s moral and religious instruction, medical treatment and educational choices, SB 12 also allows parents easier access to review library materials and classroom curriculum.
