5 things to know about Trump's DHS pick Markwayne Mullin
4. Mullin is a Christian and a member of the Cherokee Nation
As highlighted on Mullin’s campaign website, he has six children with his wife Christie, and “Their abiding faith in Christ is at the center of their family.”
In his Truth Social message unveiling Mullin as his pick to lead DHS, Trump identified Mullin as “the only Native American in the Senate.” Mullin’s entry in the Congressional Biographical Directory notes that the lawmaker is “an enrolled member of Cherokee Nation.”
The Mullins are members of the Assembly of God Church. Both Mullin’s personal X profile and his professional account have the word “Christian” as the first word in the biography, as does the “Meet Markwayne” section of his campaign website.
Mullin elaborated on his family life and religious faith in a TikTok video published on Jan. 23. He detailed how his wife has endometriosis, which resulted in it taking seven years for the couple to conceive a child. He attributed the fact that the couple was still married and eventually able to conceive a child to “God’s grace and the love that she had for me.”
“We found out on Christmas Day,” he recalled. “We were so excited. I mean, literally, that was my Christmas gift.”
Mullin explained that his wife suffered a miscarriage and insisted that the experience of losing a child informs his pro-life views on the issue of abortion: “Man, that hurt. Nobody can tell me that’s a fetus. That was a child.”
“Through God’s will, we got pregnant again just a few months after that happened,” he added. Mullin clarified that he and his wife have three biological children and three adopted children.
