7 US presidents who survived assassination attempts: From Andrew Jackson to Donald Trump

3. Teddy Roosevelt — Oct. 14, 1912
In 1912, former President Theodore Roosevelt was on the campaign trail. He had served two terms from 1901 to 1909 and, before the ratification of the 22nd Amendment, was seeking a third term.
At a campaign stop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Roosevelt was shot at close range by a saloonkeeper named John Schrank while standing outside the Gilpatrick Hotel.
Schrank wounded Roosevelt with a .32-caliber bullet, the round being slowed by a glasses case and a folded copy of a speech in his coat.
Despite being shot, Roosevelt continued speaking for about an hour before going to a hospital for medical treatment.
“Schrank was immediately detained and reportedly offered as his motive that 'any man looking for a third term ought to be shot,’” according to History.com. “Shrank was deemed insane and committed to a mental hospital, where he died in 1943.”
Roosevelt would go on to lose the election that November to Democrat Woodrow Wilson, who also defeated Republican William Howard Taft and Socialist Eugene V. Debs.
