America 250: 5 major events celebrating the nation’s semiquincentennial

4. Freedom 250 Grand Prix
A makeshift race track will be set up on streets surrounding the National Mall Aug. 22 through 23 for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix. The event, which will feature IndyCar racing, is free to attend.
It will mark the first street race on the National Mall and the first auto race ever held in Washington, D.C.
Renderings of the event show the track running in front of the U.S. Capitol, the National Air and Space Museum and the Washington Monument.
The 1.66-mile track will also pass by the National Archives, the National Gallery of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. It will feature seven turns.
According to the event website, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix will feature “various concession options for food and beverage, on-track action displayed on numerous big screens, music and other entertainment on the Main Stage.”
Limited seated tickets are available inside the track, while spectators can also watch the race from several standing areas.
Those unable to attend the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in person can watch the event on the FOX broadcast network or listen on the INDYCAR Radio Network and SiriusXM’s INDYCAR National Channel 218.
