Android 4.4.3 KitKat Update Rolls Out for Moto X and Moto G

The Android 4.4.3 KitKat update is now rolling out for the Moto X and Moto G smartphones.

The new software started getting issued to the Moto X last week and the Moto G update hit the smartphone over the weekend. It weighs in at 169MB and it brings some Moto-specific features to the handset such as the Moto Alert app and the ability to pause and resume video recording.

Those interested in testing out the Moto X can access a special deal.

Motorola Mobility will offer customers interested in the device a chance to purchase the smartphone and fully customize it for a two week trial run. The company will build them a custom off-contract Moto X and ship it to them for just a penny. The offer will be available for just one day next week.

The Moto X launched in August of last year and functions as the company's flagship handset. It features specs that failed to wow many critics, but seemed to execute well in other areas including its integration of the Android operating system, which is similar to what is found on the Nexus line. It seems to have grown in popularity thanks to that Nexus feel.

The device features a 4.7-inch screen with a curved back, a 10-megapixel camera, the option of a white or black body, 16GB or internal memory, and no microSD card slot. The device originally came with Android 4.2.2, JellyBean out of the box.

The Moto X successor, the Moto X2's release date was announced for summer 2014 by Motorola earlier this year.

The company confirmed the news during this year's Mobile World Congress during a Q&A session. They said "the next version of Moto X" will arrive sometime in "late summer." Motorola also plans to expand availability of its current smartphone lineup and the Moto Maker tool for its customers. Motorola will bring it to Europe and Mexico.
