Attacking the Dream: 7 major race massacres in US history
4. East St. Louis – 1917

Shortly before Independence Day, a rumor that a black man had murdered a white man ignited several days of violent race riots and violent encounters in East St. Louis, Illinois.
According to PBS’ American Experience, acts of violence primarily targeted the city’s growing African American community, with the days of carnage leading many to flee the area.
“The riots raged for nearly a week, leaving nine whites and hundreds of African Americans dead, and property damage estimated at close to $400,000. More than 6,000 black citizens, fearing for their lives, fled the city,” noted the program.
The violent episode had an impact on the life of noted early 20th century black activist Marcus Garvey, as a speech he made in response to the tragedy made him a major public figure.
