Boxing News 2016: Roy Jones Jr. Set To Fight A Fan; Gennady Golovkin Admits Having No Idea About Opponent
Five-division world boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. will be fighting a random fan for his next fight.
In a report by Fraser Coffeen for Bloody Elbow, the 47-year-old Jones will be fighting a still undetermined fan who will be selected though a fan contest. Fans will need to submit videos at URShow.tv asking to take the fight against Jones and the winner will be selected through Facebook voting.
The winner of the said contest will be flown out to Phoenix to get the chance to fight "Captain Hook" and if he wins, he takes home a total of $100,000. It will also be a sanctioned professional fight, as opposed to a mere exhibition match, and it will also be on pay-per-view.
The report adds that no other specific details have been given as of this posting, noting that the Arizona Boxing and MMA Commission have yet to sit down and meet about it. The said meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 25th.
Jones has been constantly competing, despite his age, in various fights around Poland, Latvia, and Russia. Holding a record of 62-9 (with 45 victories by knockout), he last saw action in December against British fighter Enzo Maccarinelli. He lost the fight via fourth round knockout.
Meanwhile, undefeated Kazakh knockout artist Gennady Golovkin recently admitted that he had no idea who his next opponent was. In a report by Steve Kim for Boxingscene, the 33-year-old Golovkin says he was unaware about who Dominic Wade was.
Wade is the International Boxing Federation (IBF) mandatory challenger for "GGG" middleweight title.
"I didn't know who is that. Just Tom (Loeffler) he tell me. It's mandatory, IBF challenger," Golovkin said. "Yeah, OK, of course I'm ready to do mandatory, this is business. I'm not selfish, like I need big fights, like money fights, no. He's mandatory, of course."
Like Golovkin, Wade holds an undefeated professional boxing record of 18-0 (with 12 victories by knockout). The two men are set to meet on April 23rd at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
