Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin Fight News: Alvarez Insists That Fight Should Happen At 155-pounds
Reigning WBC and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is insistent on having his potential super fight with fellow world champion Gennady Golovkin at a catch weight of 155-pounds.
In a report by Miguel Rivera for Boxingscene, the 25-year-old Mexican boxing sensation says he will not go beyond the said weight, which is merely a pound over from his home division at light middleweight. Alvarez has fought at the said weight for his last four bouts, including his most recent title fight against former middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in November, where he bagged his newly acquired titles.
"This fight has to happen at some point, at whatever weight," Alvarez said, according to the Boxingscene report. "There was a time where I had to give things up in order to have these big fights. I am now at a point where I don't have to give advantages to anyone."
Canelo did add that he does foresee the fight happening, sooner than later.
Being the WBC interim world middleweight champion, Golovkin is automatically the mandatory challenger for Alvarez's title. The report adds that "GGG", who rightfully opts for the fight to happen at his home weight of 160-pounds, is not obliged to comply with Alvarez's stipulation. If Alvarez does refuse to defend his title against Golovkin, he will be stripped of the belt. The latter would then be named the new undisputed champion at 160-pounds.
No final schedule has been set for both men to meet inside the squared ring as they still have respective tasks at hand against undetermined opponents. Alvarez is scheduled to make a voluntary title defense on May 7 on an HBO pay-per-view card, while Golovkin will return to action on April 23rd at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Both men are also coming off impressive steaks: Alvarez has won four straight bouts since his first professional defeat against Floyd Mayweather in September 2013 (46-1-1, with 32 victories by knockout), while Golovkin has remained undefeated (34-0, with 31 victories by knockout).
