This week marks the anniversary of when construction began on the Brazilian landmark and towering statue called Christ the Redeemer.

The foundation stone for the giant statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro was laid, even though at that point the final design for the project had not yet been selected.

A little over nine years later, the statue would be opened to the public, becoming one of the “New 7 Wonders of the World.”
