'We poisoned our community': 4 reactions to DEA allowing fentanyl pills to hit the streets

3. Mayor Tim Keller

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller condemned reports that the DEA allowed hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills to reach New Mexico communities, calling the alleged strategy "disgusting."

In a statement Wednesday, Keller said the fentanyl epidemic has "torn through our streets, taking lives, breaking families, and fueling the suffering we see on our streets every day."

"It is disgusting to think that federal authorities may have allowed hundreds of thousands of these deadly pills to move into our community and possibly killed people through their actions," Keller wrote.

Keller said Albuquerque has "carried the cost" of the fentanyl epidemic for far too long, adding that "residents deserve justice, because no community should be treated as collateral damage in the fight against fentanyl."
