People around the world will celebrate Earth Day on Monday, a holiday aimed at promoting better treatment of the environment through personal actions and public policy.

The celebration began in the United States, coming in response to increased concerns over pollution, with events being held across the country that were reportedly attended by millions of people.

Since then, organizers have pointed to notable legislative advancements at the national and international level, while also urging greater action to combat environmental problems.

Here are five interesting things about Earth Day. They include when it was first celebrated, the theme for the 2024 observance, and the urban legend that one of the founders was a murderer.
