Earthquake Today: Chile and Oklahoma Hit by Strong Quakes

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake has hit northern Chile early Saturday morning. The quake was felt for miles around, however early reports from emergency and mine officials indicated that any damage to property or copper mines in the area was minimal.

The strong quake struck at 3:13 a.m. EDT, and was centered 13 miles northeast of Antofagasta, at a depth of 20.5 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey has recorded.

The earliest readings listed the trembler as a 6.0-magnitude quake, however that was later revised down to a magnitude 5.8.

ONEMI, the state emergency office, has said the earthquake knocked out cell-phone services in some areas, but it had received no reports of damages.

Many in the South American country felt anxious as the tremor hit; with Feb. 2010’s massive 8.8-magnitude quake and tsunami in central Chile still fresh in their minds. That quake killed more than 500 people.

In other reports a magnitude 4.7 earthquake also hit Oklahoma at 2:12 a.m. local time and was located six miles north of Prague, Okla. or 47 miles east of Oklahoma City, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

There was no immediate information on damage or injuries.

There were reports of the quake being felt as far as Kansas and North Texas, according to NewsOn6.
