1. The 2000 presidential election

The 2000 presidential election between then-Vice President Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush came down to the wire, with the U.S. Supreme Court ordering the halting of an ongoing recount in Florida that extended past the federally mandated deadline for the submission of electoral vote totals. The Bush v. Goredecision handed Florida’s 25 electoral votes and the presidency to Bush.

In January 2001, as Congress gathered to certify the results of the election, a dozen members of the U.S. House of Representatives verbally objected to the certification of the electoral votes in Florida. Those who objected to the certification of electoral votes in Florida include three members who are still in office today: Reps. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Texas, Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, and Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif. Their effort failed to bear fruit due to the lack of support from a member of the U.S. Senate.
