'Girls' Season 5 News: HBO Series To End After Sixth Season

After nearly four years of Brooklyn shenanigans and coming-of-age hijinks, it's almost time for fans of the popular comedy-drama TV series "Girls" to bid Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham), Marnie Michaels (Allison Williams), Shoshanna Shapiro (Zosia Mamet), and Jessa Johansson (Jemima Kirke) adieu.

The controversial Dunham-created series has been renewed for a sixth - and final - run, which will air in 2017, HBO confirmed on Jan. 6. The news comes ahead of the show's Season 5 premiere, which means that fans still have two full seasons of "Girls" to enjoy before it bows out for good.

"I can't imagine a more fulfilling creative experience than 'Girls,'" actress and executive producer Dunham said in a statement, adding, "We look forward to creating a sixth season that will honor our amazing cast, crew and fans."

According to E! News, an end date has been determined for "Girls," though the news outlet did not reveal the exact date.

The announcement that the HBO series will conclude after its sixth run comes as no surprise as Dunham has often said that she intends to wrap up "Girls" after half a dozen seasons. "Never say never, but that is the way we're thinking about it right now and we're starting to think about sort of how to wrap up the storylines of these particular young women," Dunham said during a call to the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show radio program in September.

"It's always been important to us that we know and understand when it's time to wrap it up," the 29-year-old actress/writer/director/producer told Entertainment Weekly last month.

In April 2015, Dunham also spoke about the impending conclusion of "Girls" in an interview with Variety, saying, "I think America has a tendency to push shows past their due dates."

"Girls" Season 5 premieres Sunday, Feb. 21, on HBO.
