'Grey's Anatomy' Season 9 Star Talks Show: Eric Dane's Next Role

Eric Dane played the beloved Mark Sloan for six years on ABC's hit medical drama "Grey's Anatomy." However, much to fans disappointment, Dane was killed off in the 9th season. Dane left the show because landed the role of Commander Tom Chandler on TNT's "The Last Ship."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dane discusses leaving "Grey's Anatomy" and joining the cast of 'The Last Ship."

"Grey's Anatomy is a world - it's not about any one individual actor and the storylines were sort of … you know, heading in different directions. So [being cast] was an opportunity for me to go and I was interested in something different," Dane said.

It appears Dane misses the medical drama, but is still pleased with his role of Commander Tom Chandler on "The Last Ship."

"I loved doing Grey's Anatomy. I would have done it until the final episode, but ['The Last Ship'] was something I couldn't pass up," the actor told Entertainment Weekly.

Though there were certainly some challenges which switching from a medical show to a survival and adventure show.

"On Grey's Anatomy, I didn't have to move too much. I think I ran through the hospital three times. But this is a more physically demanding role," he admitted.

He further explained the differences between the roles, saying, "Mark Sloan would never get on a ship."

"The Last Ship" has not yet premiered, however TNT is expecting the first episode will air in the summer of 2014.

Filming for the "The Last Ship" will start in the fall of 2013.
