'Hand of Providence': 7 top moments in Trump's State of the Union address marking nation's 250th anniversary

4. Trump profiles victims of illegal immigrant crime, tells Democrats they should ‘be ashamed’

Throughout his speech, Trump highlighted the consequences of unchecked illegal immigration into the U.S. He discussed the case of 5-year-old Dalilah Coleman, who was hit by a tractor-trailer driven by an illegal immigrant in June 2024.

While Trump told those gathered in the chamber that “doctors said Dalilah would never be able to walk or talk, have a good life” or “eat again,” he expressed gratitude that “against all odds, she is now in the first grade, learning to walk.”

The president drew attention to Coleman’s presence in the House Gallery, calling her a “great inspiration.” He then called on Congress to pass “the Dalilah Law,” which would bar states from granting commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

Trump also mentioned 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina, a high school cheerleader who was stabbed to death by a previously arrested illegal immigrant. Medina’s mother, Jacqueline, was also in the House Gallery.

After warning that Democrats would embrace open borders policies again if elected and slamming them for blocking funding for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the president asked lawmakers to stand if they agreed with a statement asserting that “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

When Democrats declined to stand, Trump told them, “You should be ashamed of yourself.” Members of the so-called “Squad,” a group of progressive House Democrats including Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., shouted at the president at this point in the speech.
