While viewers have already been treated to the actress who plays the mother— Cristin Milioti was introduced not too long ago— some fan theories have pointed to a heartbreaking end for the couple many spent nine years waiting for.

In "HIMYM" season 9 episode 19, "Vesuvius," there appears to be some foreshadowing that the mother of Ted Mosby's children could die; in essence, all the stories Ted told to his children would be to help them remember their mother.

In one scene, Ted laughs that because his now-wife knows all of his stories, he'll turn into an old guy constantly spinning the same old yarns.

"I love your yarns. I hope you never stop spinning them," the mother says. "But I don't want you to be the guy who lives in his stories. Life only moves forward."

Some fans pointed to that being proof that she would want Ted to move forward past the loss of his wife.

Another instance of "Vesuvius" pointing to the mother's death comes when Robin finally sees her mother at her wedding: she breaks down and begins to cry. When Ted's wife asks, "What type of mother misses their daughter's wedding?" Ted starts to sob as well— fans believe this is because she won't make it to their daughter's wedding.

Viewers also pointed out to other discrepancies, like the hotel manager not aging, Ted wearing the same clothes he did as the day of the wedding, and snow falling at the end as plot foreshadowing: they feel the mother being present was an illusion.

Regardless of all the fan theories, show creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays have revealed that the episode will be a distant glimpse into the future.

"We're a very time-jumpy show, so you will see a lot of the future and where everyone is in the end," Thomas told TV Guide, hinting at a possibility beyond 2030.
