4 highlights from JD Vance's Hungary speech: Shares love of Jesus, warns against communism, far-left ideology

3. Vance says ‘sacrificial love of Jesus Christ’ is central to Western civilization

After stressing the need to “defend” Western civilization, Vance reflected on the fact that his speech took place just two days after Easter Sunday and highlighted the role Christianity has played in Western civilization: “We just celebrated Easter, of course, all of us. And for 2,000 years, our civilization has been shaped … above all and beyond all, by the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.”

Identifying Western civilization as being “built upon the laws of Moses and the laws of Rome,” Vance insisted that “that society has produced not oppression but the most free, tolerant and prosperous societies in the history of humanity.”

“Concepts like God-given natural rights, a sense of duty to one’s neighbors, an obligation to protect the weak and the vulnerable and a belief in free will and individual conscience,” he said, are ideas that have “brought mankind closer to universal human dignity and flourishing.”

“From those principles that founded our civilization, everything else flows,” he declared. “The way we pray, the way we form and raise our families, our sense of law and order and the way we dispense justice. These are truths rooted in Scripture.”
