About half of the interview was devoted to illegal immigration, and Baier started off by pressing Harris on the Biden administration's record on the hot-button issue.

After Baier pointed out that her administration removed Trump-era safeguards such as the Remain-in-Mexico policy for asylum seekers, Harris noted that the first bill her administration proposed was related to immigration.

Baier also asked Harris if her administration owes an apology to the families of Rachel Nungaray, Laken Riley and Rachel Morin, three women who were allegedly assaulted and killed by illegal immigrants who were released after entering the country.

Harris acknowledged the killings were "tragic cases" and said she felt "sincerely" sorry for the families, but went on to blame Trump for acting to move his supporters in Congress to kill a border security bill earlier this year, though Baier noted six Democratic senators also voted against it.

In response to a question regarding her 2019 position on decriminalizing illegal border crossings, Harris noted "that was five years ago," and suggested she had changed her mind.

"I do not believe in decriminalizing border crossings, and I have not done that as vice president, and I would not do that as president," she said.
