Christianity is an ‘anchor': 5 takeaways from King Charles' speech to Congress

2. Remembering 9/11

The king noted in his speech that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, in which Islamic extremists launched coordinated attacks that resulted in the deaths of approximately 3,000 Americans.

“This atrocity was a defining moment for America, and your pain and shock were felt around the whole world,” Charles said. “We stood with you then. And we stand with you now in solemn remembrance of a day that shall never be forgotten.”

Charles noted that he and his wife, Camilla, were planning to visit New York City as part of their official trip and would pay their respects to the victims and their families.

He noted that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization invoked its Article 5 clause for the defense of an attacked member state, and that the U.K. and U.S. “answered the call together” to fight terrorism.

The English monarch mentioned the many times that the two nations have fought side-by-side, including both World War I and World War II, the Afghan War, and then promoted the need to help aid Ukraine following the Russian invasion of the Eastern European nation.

“Today, Mr. Speaker, that same, unyielding resolve is needed for the defense of Ukraine and her most courageous people in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace,” he said.
