Leah Remini Revelation a 'Publicity Stunt,' Church of Scientology Rep Says

Leah Remini decided to go public with her reason for leaving the Church of Scientology, and now the Church has reportedly responded. A representative for the organization called Remini "self-absorbed" and using her exit from Scientology as public fodder.

"It comes as no surprise that someone as self-absorbed as Leah Remini with an insatiable craving for attention would exploit her former faith as a publicity stunt by rewriting her history with it, including omitting that she was participating in a program to remain a Scientologist by her own choice, as she was on the verge of being expelled for her ethical lapses," a representative told Us Weekly.

Remini left the cult seven months ago after a lifetime spent as a Scientologist. She only recently opened up and explained the reason why she left. She said that her daughter was getting to the age where she would be being "vetted" for Scientology and expected to participate in the organization, which is not what Remini wanted for her child.

"I started thinking of my own childhood and how I grew up resenting my mother because she was never home," Remini told Buzzfeed. "But my mom thought she was doing something good – she thought she was helping the planet. That's what the Church tells you. In my house, it's family first – but I was spending most of my time at the Church. So, I was saying 'family first,' but I wasn't showing that. I didn't like the message that sent my daughter."

There has been a very public struggle between Remini and the Church ever since she left. Former friends such as Kirstie Alley reportedly left her side and she has had to find comfort in others such as Jennifer Lopez. Remini's family has been vocal about her decision to leave, and Remini is reportedly planning to write a memoir including her experiences as a Scientologist. It's unknown when the book will be available.
