5. Korean War

Sometimes called “the Forgotten War” because it took place between World War II and the Vietnam War, the Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953, ending with an armistice agreement.

The conflict saw the United States and the United Nations support South Korea against North Korea and its communist allies, China and the Soviet Union. Approximately 37,000 Americans died during the war.

“No peace treaty was ever signed between North and South Korea and in the decades since the Korean War, North Korean forces have conducted numerous cross-border incursions and other acts of aggression,” explained the U.S. Department of Defense in a 2023 article.

“U.S. forces and U.N. representatives are still in South Korea with the goal of preventing another war. U.S. Forces Korea is responsible for supporting and training joint South Korea-U.S. forces and United Nations Command multinational forces.”
