National Fried Chicken Day Today

This year National Fried Chicken Day has arrived on Friday and Americans everywhere are celebrating their favorite dish.

Meat coated with batter and fried, the dish remains one of the most popular, well-loved items in households across the country.

Largely credited to have originated in the South, fried chicken offers a light crunch and moist, perfectly cooked meat. Traditional Southern fried chicken comes complete with a lightly seasoned batter which adds a crisp coating or crust outside. The meat is either pan-fried, deep fried, or pressure fried.

Fried chicken is different from other fried forms of chicken in that it is generally cut at the joints, and the bones and skin are left intact. A mark of well made fried chicken is crisp, well-seasoned skin devoid of excess fat.

Moreover, the international renowned dish is as versatile as it is popular. The flavor of the chicken's crisp exterior can range from sweet to savory, and the fried chicken recipe has been tweaked into items such as Buffalo wings, chicken fingers, chicken nuggets, and chicken fried steak, among many other varieties.

On Twitter, users are sounding off about their fried chicken celebrations on Friday.

"I need to get a 3 piece (dark) and a biscuit in honor of National Fried Chicken Day," wrote Joriee.

Jason posted, "Happy National Fried Chicken Day, or as we like to call it in the South… Friday."

"Happy NFC Day everyone," Left Handed Cook wrote, abbreviating the national holiday. "May your day be filled with golden crusts!"

Many users had questions about the decadent dish.

"National Fried Chicken Day," posted Brody before asking, "What's better than buttermilk fried, I need some recs."

Gourmet Live had some answers about what makes the best friend chicken, posting, "This oven-fried panko version produces moist, flavorful meat and the requisite crunch."
