New York Marathon 2011 Results: Geoffrey Mutai Wins, Breaks NYC Record
Thirty-year-old Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya broke the record for the New York City Marathon at the weekend, destroying a speedy pack and crossing the finish line at 2:05:06.
The previous record, set in 2001 by Ethiopian Tesfaye Jifar at 2:07:43, was blown away by nearly three minutes.
Mutai is set to be the favorite at next summer’s Olympics in London after running the fastest 26.2 miles in history earlier this year.
The second and third runner up of the marathon today also broke the old New York record. Kenyan Emmanuel Mutai (no relation) came in second, and Ethiopian Tsegaye Kebede came third.
The women’s title for the New York City Marathon was won by Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia. Dado was behind London Marathon champion Mary Keitany by almost 2.5 miles at the 15-mile mark but made a stunning comeback to win her first major marathon title.
For the women’s wheelchair race, 25-year-old American Amanda McGrory set a course record. For the men’s wheelchair, Japan’s Masazumi Soejima came in first.
A total of 47,107 runners ran through the five boroughs of New York.
