NFL Trade Rumors 2016: Josh McCown, Colin Kaepernick Headline Trade Talks

The Vikings and the Cowboys are looking for key reinforcements.

As the 2016 NFL season draws near, the rumor mill is once again packed with trade rumors involving teams looking for that final piece in the puzzle. Big names such as Colin Kaepernick and Josh McCown may be on the verge of changing uniforms, per reports from various insiders.

However, there are complications that may cast doubt on these impending trade scenarios. Risks are as high as the stakes, and with the league becoming even more challenging as the preseason closes, teams may be willing to take the leap of faith.

The Minnesota Vikings are in dire need of a proper quarterback if they want to get themselves back into the Super Bowl conversation. The sickening injury to QB Teddy Bridgewater may be either doom the team, or enable them to open doors for potential game-changing stars.

Bridgewater suffered an ACL tear and a dislocated knee, which proved too graphic even for his teammates. The quarterback is expected to be out for the rest of the year following surgery and rehabilitation. This leaves the Vikings with two options: either rely on the veteran guile of Shaun Hill or look for a more viable championship player on the trade market.

As of press time, their targets include interesting free agent Michael Vick, Denver's Mark Sanchez, Tampa Bay's Mike Glennon and San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick. One of the favorites, however, is Cleveland Browns' Josh McCown, who may fill the leadership role the Vikings would need during Bridgewater's absence.

The Browns, however, are reportedly setting a heavy price on McCown, who might not be worth the money in this scenario. McCown had not been a dominant force in the league and has a dismal 18-39 win loss record as a starter. However, his team believed in his drive to win, and he might gain the same trust with the Vikings.

Cowboys looking for options

The Lone Star State has a lot on their hands this offseason in terms of injuries. Their surging running back Darren McFadden and starting quarterback Tony Romo are both sidelined with injuries suffered during the preseason.

With Romo's recovery from a fractured vertebra projected at 6-10 weeks, Dallas would have to look for other options in the quarterback position. Their main target looks to be 49ers' Kaepernick, who is openly disgruntled by his current team. The struggling Kaepernick was forced to sit on the bench as Coach Jim Tomsula in exchange for Blaine Gabbert toward the end of last season.

Even before suffering a broken elbow in the offseason, McFadden is also embroiled trade talks. The running back is set to become a free agent next year, and if the Cowboys allow him to leave by that time, they will get nothing in return. McFadden had performed his best during the 2015 season, but with the Cowboys' crowded depth chart, he might see his minutes dip and demand for a change in scenery.
