Sahar Gul Not Doing Well in Hospital

Latest reports show that Sahar Gul, a 15-year-old who was tortured by her in-laws, is not doing well in the hospital. She is currently in India, being treated for physical and psychological trauma suffered at the hands of her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law. Her husband has not been arrested yet.

Wazhma Frogh of the Afghan Women’s Network gave the following update to reporters. “She needs proper food, proper care that our government’s hospitals don’t have.” Gul is not eating and unable to move her battered body. She still cannot speak.

Frogh also said, “We’ve provided her with a trauma counselor because she is very traumatized, and even when I want to take her hand, she resisted despite being unconscious. Now she doesn’t want anyone to even touch her.”

Gul was sold by her brother to a 30-year-old man who immediately wanted her to provide services to other men. When she refused, her husband and in-laws began to starve and beat the girl, keeping her chained in the bathroom. They removed her fingernails, pulled out her hair and refused to let her see anyone.

Her family grew concerned and reported her missing to the police, who made the appalling discovery last month. President Hamid Karzi immediately told police to arrest those responsible for Gul’s abuse and called for a “serious investigation” into the situation. A warrant has been issued for Gul’s husband’s arrest.
