'The Winds of Winter' Rumors: George R.R. Martin Hopes for Late 2018 Launch But Possibility Is Slim?

It looks like the highly anticipated novel "The Winds of Winter" will not be the next book that bestselling author George R.R. Martin will release.

The next installment in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series is not the only book that he is working on. He is also busy with another project that explores the history of Westeros.

Titled "Fire and Blood," this "fake history" compilation will be divided into two volumes with the first one set to be released late next year or early 2019. The second volume, however, is "largely unwritten" so this book is not coming anytime soon.

Unfortunately, there is no publication date set for "The Winds of Winter" yet, but Martin teased the possibility in a recent post on his live journal Not A Blog:

I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that's all I care to say. Whether WINDS or the first volume of FIRE AND BLOOD will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018... and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream...

Martin is not one to reveal estimation on how long it will take before he completes "The Winds of Winter," the novelist is working away. Of course, as he pointed out, he goes through this set of struggles that a writer usually undergoes.

He has also emphasized in the past that apart from filling the pages, Martin also needs to do rewriting and editing so it looks like there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.

While he works to complete "Fire and Blood" and "The Winds of Winter" in time for a release late next year, fans should not hold their breath for that just yet.
