'The X-Files' revival plot news: Season to explore split between Scully and Mulder
More news about the upcoming revival of "The X-Files" revealed details about how Mulder and Scully had split.
The series is expected to feature Fox Mulder, played by David Duchovny, and Dana Scully, played by Gillian Anderson, in a situation unlike how the series ended previously. The investigators will no longer be a couple.
With that, fans have been wondering how the show will portray their breakup. According to The Hollywood Reporter, creator Chris Carter shared details about how the split will be explained in the upcoming episodes. He said, "We do it in an interesting way. We play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together. It added to the storytelling opportunities. It's something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie."
However, he did confirm that the couple will not get back together at the end of the six-episode season. In addition, there were also questions on whether the series will go past the upcoming season. Duchovny recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the matter. He said, "I would be open to doing another cycle. I don't know that I could do a 20-episode version of this show at this point in my life, and I don't know that Gillian could. But I think everybody is open ended on what happens after this. Certainly, we didn't bring it back with the idea of ending it."
Carter then shared that the production for the series has finished. He also commended his team for their ability to pull off the six episodes. He explained that the show benefited from youthful energy.
The revival of The X-Files series is expected to air on Jan. 24.
