Top Executive Quits Job, Moves to Haiti to Help Pastor Build School, Tackle Gang Crisis
When Caroline Sada's name was found on a list of kidnapping targets, she fled her native Haiti. She studied in America and England, and went on to become a high-ranking retail executive for MAC Cosmetics.
After the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, she visited a slum called Cité Soleil. The slum, located outside of Port-au-Prince, is one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of the Western Hemisphere. There, she met Pastor Jean Heleur, who toiled to care for a group of children out of the estimated 250,000 people who lived in Cité Soleil. Meeting these children and seeing their squalid homes changed Sada's life.
She quit her job and moved back to Haiti to build a school for the children. Her motivation?
"Just get the kids off the street," Sada said. "Otherwise they're gonna be the next gangs."
Partnering with PRODEV, a Haitian non-profit that supports schools, she works to keep children out of trouble and give them the opportunity to thrive.
