This week marks the anniversary of the birth of Andraé Crouch, a multi-time Grammy-winning Gospel singer and composer, and his twin sister in Los Angeles, California.

The son of a minister and a dry-cleaning operations manager, Crouch wrote his first music at age 14, and eventually formed the Church of God in Christ Singers, and later served as a pastor.

“Crouch emerged as one of the most popular gospel artists in the United States writing, arranging and recording over 700 singles and more than 45 albums,” noted Black Past.

“In 1997, Crouch received an Honorary Doctor of Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. The following year, 1998, he was inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel Music Hall of Fame. And in 2004, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

Notable sacred songs written by Crouch include “My Tribute,” “Soon and Very Soon,” "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power,” "Through It All” and “Jesus is the Answer.”

In January 2015, Crouch died at Northridge Hospital Medical Center in California days after suffering a heart attack. He was 72 years old.
