Tropical Storm Don Update: Will Hit South Texas Coast
Tropical Storm Don is still on track to hit Texas coast late Friday or early Saturday, but forecasters say it will not become a hurricane.
At 5 a.m. Friday morning the storm was 290 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, Texas and was moving west-northwest at speeds of around 14 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The National Weather Service reported that at 7 a.m. the storm was 255 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, moving west northwest at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph
Don sustained maximum winds of 50 mph Thursday night, according to NHC. The storm is expected to strengthen slightly, but should gradually weaken when it makes landfall.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande to San Luis Pass.
However, Jim Rouiller, senior energy meteorologist at Planalytics Inc., said, "Don is a small-scale thing."
Don is expected to deliver three to five inches of rain – a welcomed relief for farmers enduring months of drought in the state.
