3. Trump grants diesel tax relief
In an executive order Wednesday, Trump directed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to “use his authority to defer certain diesel fuel tax payment obligations and to provide penalty relief to the extent permitted by law.” The relief runs from Oct. 5 through Dec. 31.
The order does not mention the war in Iran by name, but it points to the conflict’s economic fallout, noting, “Restricted global diesel supply has led to rising prices.” It singles out “farmers and truckers” as “particularly hard hit” by high diesel prices and states, “This targeted action will put money directly in the pocket of American farmers, truckers, and workers, to support their vital service to our Nation.”
Trump also directed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to coordinate “with agricultural cooperatives, rural fuel distributors, farm supply organizations, and other agricultural stakeholders, as determined by the Secretary of Agriculture, to ensure adequate distribution of dyed diesel for their use in high-demand areas.” Dyed diesel is tax-exempt fuel reserved for off-road uses, such as farm equipment.
