3. Trump announces reassignment of Kristi Noem, new DHS secretary

In a message posted to Truth Social Thursday, Trump announced that he would be reassigning U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem to a new role as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, which he described as “a new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida.”

While the president praised Noem for her “numerous and spectacular results” as DHS secretary, her reassignment comes amid reports of tensions between her and Border Czar Tom Homan.

Trump also announced his intention to nominate Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., as Noem’s replacement. The president described Mullin as “the only Native American in the Senate” who “gets along well with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First Agenda.”

He added that Mullin will “Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.”

While Trump stated that Mullin is slated to assume his new role on March 31, Mullin’s appointment as DHS secretary is subject to confirmation from the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate. Should the U.S. Senate confirm Mullin, the junior Oklahoma senator would be forced to abandon his ongoing re-election bid for a first full term. Oklahoma’s Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt would then appoint a replacement to fill the remainder of his term, which expires in January 2027.
